Go Fish

It’s got that perfect 90’s indie filmmaking vibe you just can’t get anymore. Shades of early Linklater as well in the dialogue. It’s just so artistically authentic and real. Incredible writing, and then of course writer and STAR Guinevere Turner went on to write AMERICAN PSYCHO right after this. That trajectory is unparalleled. We stan.

Go Fish has that scrappy early-’90s indie energy that I really like. The black-and-white 16mm photography, Chicago locations, and mostly non-professional cast give it this loose, almost documentary feel that fits the story perfectly. It feels lived-in instead of polished to death.

Guinevere Turner has a really natural presence, and I liked how the movie mixes romance, awkwardness, friendship, and everyday conversation without trying to make everything feel overly dramatic. It’s definitely very much of its era, but that’s part of the charm.

The Blu-ray presentation is strong too. Cinématographe restored it in 4K from the original 16mm negatives, and the grainy black-and-white image still looks appropriately film-like instead of scrubbed clean. The limited media-book/slipcase artwork is classy as **** too.

Not something I’d throw on when I want explosions and insanity 😂, but as a little slice of ’90s indie cinema, I’m glad I have it in the collection.

Lovely little indie LGBTQ film. Black and white pops in 4K. Great slip case and essays

Clerks, great as it is, gets all the glory, but the raw approach to queer women in Go Fish puts it in league of its own. A fantastic, overdue release. A great pairing with The Watermelon Woman.
