Good late Giallo
"A good late Giallo from the Master of Giallo. The opening is top knotch. It falls really off in the middle, but gets the curve to the end. Overall I had a good time with it. Really gory scenes in here."

A series of grisly murders are taking place across the Italian city of Turin, prompting the authorities to fear that a copycat killer is on the loose and emulating a gruesome spree that occurred seventeen years prior. Those murders were pinned on a writer with dwarfism by the name of Vincenzo de Fabritiis, who subsequently passed away, effectively closing the case. Now, Detective Ulisse Moretti, who led the original investigation, finds himself drawn out of retirement, and, together with the young Giacomo Gallo - whose mother was a victim of the supposed “Dwarf Killer” - attempts to unravel the mystery of these new slayings as the mutilated corpses continue to pile up.
Returning to the atmosphere and themes of his landmark giallo Deep Red (1975), 2001’s SLEEPLESS saw the welcome return of horror maestro Dario Argento (Suspiria, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) to the subgenre with which he had made his name. Starring Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) and featuring a host of splatterific, Grand Guignol set pieces courtesy of practical FX wizard Sergio Stivaletti, together with a pulse-pounding score by Argento regulars Goblin - who reunited especially for this movie - Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to bring SLEEPLESS to UHD for the very first time, restored in 4K from the original camera negative and accompanied by a host of both new and archival bonus features.

"A good late Giallo from the Master of Giallo. The opening is top knotch. It falls really off in the middle, but gets the curve to the end. Overall I had a good time with it. Really gory scenes in here."
"I enjoyed this way more than I feared I might. The received wisdom that OPERA (1987) was the last good movie that Argento directed is clearly just wrong. SLEEPLESS is great. The storytelling takes a few wild leaps towards the end. And It’s perhaps not as beautiful to look at as his earlier films. But by eschewing some of the more fantastical production design and lighting it’s more realist. This is undeniably an Argento film. The fluid and disconcerting camera work. The shocking and inventive violence. There are several incredibly tense sequences, not least the whole relentless opening act. And the score is magnificent, sadly the last by Goblin. The Vinegar Syndrome 4K transfer looks great and the extras are extensive as you’d expect."
"widely considered a stellar, highly recommended physical media release. For fans of the filmmaker, it provides a dramatic visual upgrade over previous Blu-ray iterations, presenting the film in its finest home video form to date."
"Not his best but well worth a watch, great edition"
"The 4k is a huge step up visually from the previous blu-ray release. One if Argento's better latter day movies. Goblin's soundtrack add an extra layer of greatness to the film. The train cat and mouse chase feels like classic Argento. I purchased the slipcover edition, which is really nice."
"Another Argento upgrade for a title with spotty home video history. Thank you Vinegar Syndrome, this one deserved a 4K restoration for posterity. Fantastic set."
"Movie looks incredible! Very fun gaillo. Tons of features"
"Happy to add another Argento 4k to the collection. Not his best but still a must own. Restoration looks great!"
"Later Argento tends to get brushed aside and it has taken me a long time to get around to this one. Genuinely feels like Argento is trying to tap into the same vibe as his Animals trilogy but with more ambitious plotting. It's a little bit of a mixed bag but damn if he doesn't go off stylistically. The guy knows how to put together a murder sequence!"
"This is what I expect from the Giallo maestro. Definitely the best film he made after the 80s."
