Blood Cult is rough as ****, but that’s exactly why it works for me. It has that unmistakable mid-’80s shot-on-video look, a simple college-town murder setup, body parts getting hacked off, weird cult imagery, and enough cheap gore to keep the whole thing moving. It basically feels like something you would’ve rented purely because the VHS cover looked nasty.
The big appeal is the history though. This was marketed as the first movie made specifically for the home-video market, so watching it now feels like seeing a little piece of SOV horror history. The sheriff investigation gives it a fun structure, and the whole “blood cult” angle gives the movie just enough weirdness to stand out.
Degausser did exactly the right thing with the Blu-ray too. They restored it from the earliest-generation archival tape master instead of trying to make it look like film, so all that ugly video texture stays intact. The commentaries, hour-long making-of, interviews, trailers, and other archival material make this a seriously loaded release.
Cheap, ******, historically important, and full of homemade horror charm. This is exactly the kind of tape-era oddity I want preserved. 😁
