Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

The film that put director Zhang Yimou and star Gong Li on the international cinema map follows beautiful young Ju Dou as she is married off to an egregiously cruel, and also impotent, owner of a dye mill in the Chinese countryside in the early 20th century. When the boss’ nephew arrives on the scene they fall for each other with lustful abandon. Their impassioned affair soon leads to a son. After the clandestine couple convinces the despotic husband that he is the father, the boy is raised as his long-awaited heir. However the myriad complications of infidelity lead to a visceral and psychological melee  between the lovers and their ruler with explosively dramatic turns. With its stunning mise en scène and sumptuous use of color, Ju Dou was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards® and has earned a reputation as one of the greatest Chinese films ever made.

"Released in 1990, Ju Dou holds the distinction of being the first Chinese film to have been nominated for an academy award, which generated controversy within the Chinese government at the time. This movie captures a muted, slow burn tragedy on a rural dye mill in the early 20th century, and is an early showcase of both Zhang Yimou and Gong Li's talents and chemistry as director and actor. The transfer is organic and crisp, with the earthy grime of the dye mill set practically coming through the screen. Absolutely recommended for anyone who can enjoy a movie that slowly envelopes the audience in both feeling and atmosphere."

"Generational silent rage and shame. Beholden to old ways of thinking and doing that restrict empathy, kindness and desire. Home as a hell. The tyranny of filial piety and cruelty passed down by what the blood knows and the walled-in environment compounds. A woman as an enslaved reproductive tool for an infertile man, beaten for not producing a child, but later, in a cruel twist of fate, her ability to give life is a further form of entrapment. Lives of toil drained of colour, save for the resplendent towers of fabric which are their labour, and serve as the striking symbol of sex and death. A fiery, inescapable fate. Fully restrained, youthful Gong Li on full power. Raise the Red Lantern next please, Film Movement!"

"This is one of master director Zhang Yimou’s first films and like all of his early films it’s absolutely fantastic and I’m glad it received a Blu-ray release. I wish it received a better presentation as the one on this disc has lots of banding, smeary visuals and macroblocking."
