Coming of Age/Family Drama
"Inbetween Girl was a film I bought for two reasons. 1) it was on sale and 2) I really like the artwork that wraps around the slipcover and interior packaging. I liked the film quite a bit. Our main character Angie comes from a mixed family, and her parents are now getting a divorce. On one hand, her mother is absorbed and her work and emotionally unavailable for Angie. On the other hand, her father has found a new woman who has a daughter of her own and happens to be of Chinese descent, just like him. This causes conflict as Angie is unable to relate to their shared culture and thus feels detached from her father as well. While all this is going on, the guy Angie likes just so happens to like her too. However, he's dating someone else and is not willing to break up with her. The movie does a great job at showing how all of these compounding struggles take a toll on Angie. The film's greatest strength is it's characters and making you empathize with them, as you can see where each one is coming from. If family drama is something that interests you, I can recommend Inbetween Girl. Sadly, this release does not have a booklet (it would have been fitting, since Angie's artwork is featured throughout the movie!), but there are a few bonus features including a nearly hour long interview with the cast and crew that was hosted over Zoom by the Austin Film Society."
