Breaking the Girls

Very interesting slip cover, love the b&w with red

Breaking the Girls is basically a slick little queer erotic thriller with a Strangers on a Train setup, and that immediately gives it more personality than I expected. Agnes Bruckner and Madeline Zima play off each other really well, especially once the friendship starts turning manipulative and the whole murder pact begins to unravel.

I liked how the movie keeps shifting who you trust. It’s not the deepest thriller in the world, but it has enough twists, jealousy, ***, and bad decisions to keep things moving. It has that glossy early-2010s look, but underneath that it’s pretty nasty and pulpy in a fun way.

The Blu-ray presentation is solid, and the limited slip is a big part of the appeal for me. The black-and-white/red artwork looks sharp, and the spot gloss gives it a little extra punch in person. The director commentary, interview, archival cast interviews, and booklet make the release feel a lot more complete too.

So happy to see this film get a physical media release with some new extras, and it seems really well timed with the run of recent 90s erotic thrillers from the label. For anyone who has seen all of those and bought all the titles but is looking for more, I highly recommend this one.

It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s salacious enough with two very hot stars. I’m a big fan of both of them individually, and they spark off each other, exactly as intended.

Full marks for the gorgeous slip cover.

Jamie Babbit (of 'But I'm a Cheerleader' fame) and Guinevere Terner ('Go Fish', 'American Psycho') collaborate on this flawed but fun, queer-centric erotic thriller. Kinda plays like a trashier, feature-length episode of some CW drama you've never seen nor heard of.

Great thriller actually.
