Lifeline absolutely rules. It spends enough time with the firefighters as people that when everything finally goes to ****, the action actually means something. Ching Wan Lau is great, the station dynamics feel lived-in, and Johnnie To keeps the whole thing grounded even when the movie starts going huge.
And that final fire sequence? Insane. Nearly 45 minutes of smoke, flames, collapsing spaces, and people trying not to die, and somehow it never feels repetitive. The practical fire work and staging are incredible. This is basically Hong Kong’s answer to Backdraft, except with that unmistakable Johnnie To intensity.
The 4K is killer too. The restoration comes from the original 35mm camera negative with HDR, and the image has strong detail while still looking properly film-like. The disc is loaded with extras too — new Johnnie To and special-effects interviews, a video essay, archival material, commentary, booklet, and poster.
Great movie, great restoration, stacked release. This one earns the full five from me. 😁

VS has released an outstanding 4K presentation of Johnnie To's Lifeforce, a movie that showcases the director at a time when he was really coming into his own. The transfer and bonus materials are wonderful, along with the packaging. Highly recommended for fans of character-driven Hong Kong drama.
