Davey Osborne is an average 11-year-old boy with an overactive imagination. He spends his days playing video games and pretending to be a spy with his imaginary father-figure, Jack Flack - a substitute for his real father, who is struggling with the recent death of Davey's mother. However, fantasy becomes reality for Davey after he witnesses the murder of an FBI agent, who in his dying breath, gives Davey a mysterious video game cartridge called Cloak & Dagger, which in actuality contains top-secret government information. With the help of his younger friend Kim, the tech savvy Morris, and even a little help from his fictional secret agent mentor, Davey must stay one step ahead of pursuers as he tries to survive a real-life game of espionage in the streets of San Antonio, Texas.
A nostalgia laden cult favorite from director Richard Franklin (Patrick, Psycho 2) and writer Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child's Play), CLOAK & DAGGER was one of the key, trend-setting films to place young characters in high-stakes action sequences, featuring incredible stunt work, the likes of which would never be pulled off today. With a stellar starring turn from Henry Thomas (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Suicide Kings) and featuring strong supporting performances from Dabney Coleman (War Games, The Beverly Hillbillies), Christina Nigra (Twilight Zone: The Movie), and William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects), Vinegar Syndrome Ultra is proud to present CLOAK & DAGGER for the first time on 4K Ultra HD fully restored from its 35mm original camera negative.

A Childhood Favorite Revisited
"This one hits me hard with nostalgia, as it was a film I first saw in theaters with my father. Viewed through that lens or not, it still works as a thrilling and emotional family adventure. Vinegar Syndrome knocked it out of the park with the packaging, restoration, and special features—an excellent release and an easy recommendation."

8-bit fun with your cereals!
"The story is fun, imaginative. This movie's for old kids like me, born in the 80s, who played 8-bit video games and ate pop-tarts in the morning! It should be up there with Spielberg's and Zemekis'."

Flashback to the 80's
"We used to rent this all the time growing up on VHS. While it is not an amazing film but it is a fun one to revisit. While the effects at time are cheap looking now and even back then i shrugged at them. This is more of a kids film so don't expect a high end thriller that will make your head melt. The cast is great and a lot of fun. The extras are plentyful and I highly suggest picking it up so VS releases more like this"

Great Hitchcock-for-kids movie. Great transfer

Never caught this one as
"Never caught this one as a child, so I found this movie very interesting. Defiantly a high stakes one in terms of kids movies. Features were a fun watch as well"

Cloak & Dagger (1984) and Three Days of the—Kid from E. T.
"Before I get into the movie itself, I have to praise Vinegar Syndrome for another amazing release clearly curated by people who care about the films they release, the quality of their product, and the satisfaction of their customers. The 4K transfer is incredible and there's a ton to dig into with this singular spy adventure kid's movie that's probably too dark for a kid's movie (in a good way). The legitimate peril of kids in 80's kid's movies could get so extreme and Cloak & Dagger (1984), or Three Days of the—Kid from E. T. as I prefer to call it, might be the most extreme along with Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) as a close second. In this Atari-sponsored spy adventure, Davey and his friend Kim (both no older than ten) are kidnapped, shot at multiple times, nearly blown up, nearly stabbed, nearly thrown off a balcony, thrown out of a plane speeding down a runway, and probably more that I can't remember. Not only that, but Davey either kills or is responsible for the deaths of at least three people and there's even a shot of him lying in the trunk of a car next to his adult best friend who's dead from a gunshot to the face (played by a young William Forsythe who looks oddly like Guillermo del Toro). They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Right from the beginning it's clear that Davey, whose mother was recently fridged (second fridging in this marathon so far), is seriously disturbed as he sneaks around a public building holding a very real-looking toy gun while on a fantasy espionage mission with his imaginary friend, Dabney Coleman. He's just lucky Sergeant Al Powell wasn't around. The movie's like a blend of Sidekicks (1992) and Drop Dead Fred (1991) until Davey basically creates an astral projection of his imaginary friend and briefly brings him into the real world with the movie providing no explanation of how or why it happened. 🤷♂️ My favorite moment of the whole imaginary friend gimmick is when Davey steals a car to escape the villains and Dabney Coleman can't tell him how to drive it because he's just a part of Davey's imagination and can't provide any new information, just like Homer Simpson's space coyote. I'm shocked at how well Cloak & Dagger works as an espionage thriller in the vein of North by Northwest (1959) or Three Days of the Condor (1975). It's tense as hell and has a fairly gripping narrative with some wild twists (one in particular evoked an audible "No way!" from me). Also, this might be a career-best dual performance from the late great Dabney Coleman."

Badass kids movie.
"What happened to movies where kids are in moral danger? Why can't we have villains threathen our protagonists with horrible, traumatic events? E. T. kid Henry Thomas goes on a riproaring adventure to save the world. It’s awesome."

Some Cloak and Some Dagger
"It's a VSU line release, so it's going to be top quality and that is most definitely the case here. Very happy to add this one to the VynSyn shelf."
