Creepy
"Remember seeing this in the early 90's in SF on a Polanski double feature w/ Knife in the Water. My one word review of the Tenant that I left on my girlfriend's answering machine at that time was 'crrreeeeepy'. Seeing it again for the first time since then on this beautiful release (hooray for VSU style packaging on a non-kids themed movie!) I forgot how much I really appreciated this film. Polanski is at his master filmmaker prime here. Casting himself as the lead is even more impressive. And his performance is spot on for this character. Difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. His put upon, mumbly, nebbish, performance feels natural and skillful to the character and the character's changes to come. Like Repulsion, this is an uneasy witnessing of a person's decent into madness. At times it can feel a little long. Perhaps some scenes could have been cut, like the visit to his loutish friend's apartment. But that is splitting hairs. The composition, atmosphere, locations envelope, making you can feel the paranoia. So glad to have this in the collection to watch again. Much sooner than the last 30 year gap!"
