The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) represents the world's largest theatrical catalog of exploitation cinema. Their home video line presents a diverse selection of movies, ranging from new preservations of classics from the vast library of Something Weird to the wildest in shot-on-video (SOV) titles. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Welcome to Wakaliwood, Uganda: home of “DA BEST OF DA BEST MOVIES!” and the vanguards of DIY commando cinema! Under the guidance of writer-director-producer Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (IGG) and with producer-star Alan Ssali Hofmanis, this crack crew of self-taught filmmakers and martial arts aficionados produce dozens of gonzo action films in the Kampala ghetto with budgets that rarely exceed $200 USD. Utilizing scrap parts to build computers, machine guns, and a full-sized Huey helicopter, these real-life superheroes inspire more heart, imagination, and soul than a thousand Hollywood blockbusters. AGFA is proud to bring two of the most reckless brain-blasts in the Wakaliwood canon to home video—WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ALEX (2010) and BAD BLACK (2016)! And in Uganda’s finest storytelling tradition, the films are complemented by the acerbic wit of narrator/VJ (Video Joker) VJ Emmie, who sums up the Wakaliwood experience with a single sentiment: “It is a love story . . . LOVE OF ACTION!”

Reviews

Welcome to Uganda.

"You have no idea what making the most out of a very low-budget could mean until you have seen this double feature. Not every character you’ll see will be played by a professional actor. In fact, almost none of them are, but you can still feel the love for the art in every shot. The story isn’t important here. It is mostly a collection of meaningless stunts wrapped around a really tin scenario. By itself it would still be worth the look, but what is the true glue holding everything together, the icing on the cake, is the hilarious comments of VJ Emmie, that add a whole new layer throughout both films. He is constantly joking over the movies, making comments or having over the top reactions to what is going on. It’s like watching the whole thing with your best buddy laughing all the way true. I started with Who Killed Captain Alex first, and at the end I was still hungry for more and started Bad Black immediately after."

Simply a Best

"oh my. . . if you haven't seen these, you're in for a treat. 2 great movies (get a crowd to watch). Laugh with and at them,. . . but they're so much fun. And the most extras laden disc ever! Remastered nicely too, given the source material,"

Perfect films

"Hilarious, incredibly fun, and inspiring to anyone who has even a passing love for movies and films. DA BEST OF DA BEST!"

Supa indeed

"So awesome. So creative."

Commando!

"It's amazing these films are available on physical media. Don't go in expecting a masterclass in CGI and acting, but this film has a ton of heart, charm, and a hilarious video jockey voiceover. The packaging is excellent. A fun slip cover as well as reversible box art are excellent touches. I hope we get a Vol. 2!"

Another Successful Blind Buy

"Lately I’ve been trying to cool it on blind buying (to varying results) but I have to say this was worth breaking that habit for. Hilarious and oozing with passion, these flicks are more than just so-bad-they’re-good movies. In fact, I think calling them that is reductive bullshit. They’re genuine achievements. And when I say that I’m not just trying to be nice. These are movies made on a nothing budget by people who were obviously happy to be making them. So they had barely any technical knowledge — so what?? They made something that’s immensely entertaining and brought me great joy. This is what filmmaking is all about. I’ll watch this more than a lot of “good” films, that’s for sure! Bring on Volume 2!"

A couple of INCREDIBLY low

Heartwarming Action - Watch with VJ

"Movies: Who Killed Captain Alex: There's still a few bits where things get a little bit less interesting, but the VJ track absolutely gives this the juice and makes it a complete experience. I'm not sure how many times I could watch movies like this and sustain the initial high, but as with many things, sharing the experience with people new to it re-heightens it. Bad Black: Watched this with the VJ track (which is the only option on the AGFA release), and I'm now fully convinced that that is the correct presentation of the movie. It's not intrusive, it helps you keep the characters/plot straight, and it fills up lulls with hilarious jokes. In addition to being a consistently funny movie, this also has genuinely emotional beats. Little things like seeing a child in a Christmas SpongeBob shirt, or the joke about poop being everywhere ground the movie in the real lived experiences of the people making the film. The fact that they're putting so much over the top action in their movies becomes really heartwarming. Extras: Sooooo many extras. Shout out especially to the trailers, welcome videos, and some of the fan videos. The menu was a bit janky when it came tk audio selection, but it worked in the end and was honestly pretty charming. Packaging: Really great and fitting artwork choices."
