Well done revenge tale with spectacular cast

"Great cast headlined by Tim Roth. One of the most talented underrated actors of our time. Stars in this gritty revenge tale that flows evenly through the screenwriters storytelling."

Timothy D. (5/5)

Beautiful to look at, though somewhat disappointing

"A gorgeous film that left me feeling nothing. Much like the director’s previous film Slow West, Tornado feels like he chose a beloved genre and then told a story in that genre at 0. 5 speed. The cast is good but I found the main character pretty unlikable and unsympathetic. This is a revenge story but everything that happens to her and the people she cares about is her fault. The craft is exceptional but the substance is lacking. Not awful but not something I see myself revisiting anytime soon."

Rian M. (3/5)

Glad I held out for a more premium edition

"I’m based in the UK — specifically Scotland, where this hails from — and held off on the UK release in the hope of something a bit nicer, so glad I did. The artwork on the release is lovely and the essay from Josh Slater-Williams is brilliantly insightful on the film’s musical heritage."

A Spaghetti Western/Kurosawa Film In 18th Century Scotland

"Saw this at the cinema on release, so was extremely happy to be able to get a copy via Vinegar Syndrome’s partner releases. An absolutely beautiful film with a really unique setup. It plays like a Kurosawa samurai vengeance piece, so consequently also has spaghetti western vibes (especially due to its setting and non-Japanese cast) - whilst being an authentic period piece set in 1790s Scotland. The always excellent Tim Roth being the thoroughly evil and unlikeable as Sugarman, the leader of a gang of murderers and cutthroats, one of the archetypes he seems to excel at. The equally excellent Jack Lowdon as his younger brother who suffers from having a vestigial conscience and the excellent Mitsuki Kimura (aka Kƍki) as the titular Tornado. Excellent presentation on the media, cover art, slipcase etc as is to be expected for VS/OCN - this time on the IFC partner label."

Mark S. (5/5)

Cool

"Tornado is a strange but stylish samurai revenge Western, setting swordplay and vengeance against the bleak, windswept backdrop of 1790s Britain. It is lean, moody, and a little odd, but that mix of Eastern samurai myth and dirty frontier grit gives it a cool personality."

Shane P. (5/5)

A new film from the

"A new film from the guy who made Slow West?! I’m in. Heard great things so I didn’t hesitate to grab it. Some nice features on this disc, and the transfer is great! Recommended."

Hussein K. (4/5)

Good movie great transfer and extras

"Great storytelling about loss and Revenge. The cast selection was perfect and while not much action it will keep you entertained. Great transfer and packaging."

James S. (5/5)

Revenge Flick

"Look do you like revenge flicks? Have you watched all the older ones? Then this will scratch the itch."

Michael G. (5/5)

Recommended

"Pretty fun 70s style revenge flick with pretty good visuals to enjoy throughout it's runtime."

Benjamin C. (5/5)

A lean, atmospheric survival thriller

"John Maclean’s Tornado usese sparse dialogue, sharp physical storytelling, and striking 35mm photography to conjure a fog-soaked frontier somewhere between Red Sun and The Proposition. The first half is gripping in its simplicity, but once exposition and flashbacks begin to spell everything out, some of the mystery evaporates. Even so, the film remains visually absorbing throughout, and Maclean’s offbeat genre instincts keep it compelling even when the narrative turns more conventional. A strong-looking 4K release for a film that thrives on texture and mood."
