I was expecting something a little more in a particular surrealist camp after watching the INCREDIBLE Hourglass Sanitorium so perhaps that’s why I bounced off this one just a little. It has some great moments, unforgettable images, but perhaps goes on a bit too long for its own good…

The Saragossa Manuscript is an extraordinary work of cinematic art, filled with surreal imagery and an endlessly inventive screenplay of stories within stories. Despite its length, it remains fascinating and rewards repeat viewings. The package is also beautifully designed and feels worthy of such a unique classic.
- CBCody B.Verified Buyer1 month agoRated 4 out of 5 starsHas' masterpiece given proper treatment
How Has was able to make this absolutely batshit screenplay into a film that is coherent goes to show that the man was one **** of a director and one who should be known by more. Manuscript makes Has' later film Sanatorium seem like a cake walk as this three hour ride paints one of the most mind bending journey's I've ever seen. It does run flat in places but the sheer bulk of the material here covers those issues as the next adventure takes place in the winding, surreal experience.
Today's filmmakers wouldn't touch something like this with a 12 foot pole in fear of being blacklisted from Hollywood. This is a behemoth of a undertaking and if your expecting a straightforward narrative then you will be disappointed, because if there is one thing I can tell from Has is that straight forward storytelling is a bore. A truly wild ride that grew on me after both viewings.
