King (Craig Sheffer, Night Breed) and Tyn (Josh Charles, Four Brothers) are inmates in a North Carolina prison who overhear the story of "The Grave", which promises buried treasure to anyone daring enough to embark on its quest. Naturally, the two break out of prison with the intent to dig up the mysterious loot, only to end up in a twisty crime and horror filled saga involving fellow criminals, old flames and a character known only as "The Priest" played by Keith David (They Live).

An idiosyncratic and highly entertaining entry in the post-Tarantino, indie-crime cinema of the mid-90s, Jonas Pate's (Deceiver, TV's Outer Banks) clever amalgam of Southern Gothic, hardboiled fiction, dark comedy and Tales from the Crypt-esque horror yarn is utterly unique and elevated by an astonishing supporting cast including Eric Roberts (Runaway Train), Gabrielle Anwar (Body Snatchers), Donal Logue (Blade), Giovanni Ribisi (The Gift) and Anthony Michael Hall (TVs The Dead Zone). Never released on blu-ray, Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to present this overlooked genre oddity in a brand new 2K restoration from 35mm vault elements!

Reviews

Southern Spookies

"Movie: Nice little crime thriller, although I'm not sure why this is tagged horror. The included songs combined with the escaped convicts in the South were giving O Brother, Where Art Thou? The set-ups and payoffs here are pretty solid, and it's always nice to see Keith David. Extras: Several great little interviews, many of whoch have funny editing touches, e. g. including some bloopers. Also always nice to have the trailer. Packaging: Bonus points for reversible cover, and it looks nice on both sides. The poster is also a great addition."

Strong Craft, Uneven Momentum

"While the acting and cinematography are consistently strong, the film’s deliberate pacing kept me at a distance for much of its runtime. That said, the ending delivers an interesting twist that adds some welcome bite. Even if it didn’t fully click for me, this is a well-presented release that genre fans may appreciate more than I did."

Eugene H. (3/5)

The Grave VSA

"Not the type of film I was expecting, more crime fiction than horror. It’s a good treasure hunt with some black comedy. Great VSA slipcase with poster."

David P. (4/5)

The grave

"The Grave is a stylish Southern gothic thriller with a great mix of dark humor, suspense, and twisted storytelling. Craig Sheffer and Eric Roberts deliver engaging performances, and the film's gritty atmosphere pulls you in from the start. It's an underrated 90s gem that deserves a second look."

Jeffrey W. (5/5)

Richard D. (5/5)

Craig Sheffer (from Nightbreed) and

"Craig Sheffer (from Nightbreed) and Gabrielle Anwar (from Burn Notice, Body Snatchers, If Looks Could Kill) in a twisty Tales from the Crypt style tale? Fun flick, just have to get past all the abysmal accent performances. Very entertaining, good restoration. The slipcase is really nice as well. A great addition to the VSA lineup."

Jeffrey P. (5/5)

The very peak of the VSA line

"This title is the very peak of the VSA line. Don't read the plot, go blind. It's all fun and darkness skilled with cinematographic grandeur and a competent team behind-the-cameras. Thank you for including so many and varied bonus features."

Jaume M. (5/5)
