THE DEMON RAT is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT; Aurora, CO and soon to come Toronto, ON!

Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This slipcase edition (designed by Robert Sammelin) is strictly limited to 3,000 units and may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

---

Irina is a teacher in the middle of a messy divorce with her husband, Roberto, who has cunningly stolen the pharmaceutical company she was set to inherit. She's also dealing with a rat problem. A rat so large and terrible it has mutilated her dog. Enlisting the help of her new love interest and biologist friend, Axel, they soon discover that Roberto has been recklessly dumping nuclear waste to get ahead and wreaking havoc on the nearby wildlife. Now Irina has to contend with a mutated rat in her home and her soon-to-be ex who will do anything to keep his secret.

In one of his last horror films, director Rubén Galindo Jr. (DON'T PANIC, CEMETERY OF TERROR) delivers a vision of an apocalyptic near-future Mexico, where the environment has become a wasteland. Citizens can't go outside without a ventilator, acid rain alerts blast from the loud speakers and almost all wildlife is on the verge of extinction. Throwing science fiction, horror, action and melodrama into a genre blender, Vinegar Syndrome Active is proud to present THE DEMON RAT (aka Mutantes del año 2000, La rata maldita), newly scanned and restored in 2k and presented here in its worldwide Blu-ray debut.

Reviews

'90s low budget Mexican monster action

"Sold out though after a warehouse clearance they managed to find a couple more, which is when i bought it. Was it worth it? If you like films like Bruno Mattei's Rats but with a Mexican touch, this low budget, misty-shot post apocalyptic monster movie hits the spot. The effects are cool though cheap and the action and pace are up to snuff. Great restoration while maintaining the grit, cool extras."

"Too talky and not as entertaining as the other Galindo Jr releases. But a nice edition with some killer artwork nonetheless."

Excellent Movie And Stellar Slipcase!

"This movie has a special place in my heart as it is in line with the endless movies coming out of Mexico that are very exciting and just plain fun to watch! The sub-genre of Mexican horror is alive and well, as seen in this wonderful flick! It kept my interest throughout! The slipcover is marvelous as well, as is always the case with the masters of slipcovers, VS! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

Great VSA

"Ruben Galindo Jr. ’s The Demon Rat is a wild mix of grimy atmosphere, cheap thrills, and unforgettable creature effects that ooze pure 80s Mexican horror charm. It’s scrappy, chaotic, and absolutely entertaining, the kind of midnight movie that begs to be shared with friends."
