The Demon Rat

No budget fun that made me laugh out loud

The Demon Rat is exactly the sort of bizarre Mexican horror film I hope to find buried in the VS catalog. It is cheap, messy, and completely ridiculous, but there is so much enthusiasm behind the mutant rat madness that I found it difficult not to enjoy. The creature effects have that wonderful handmade quality I have a soft spot for, and the film just keeps getting stranger as it goes along. It is certainly rough around the edges, but that is a large part of its charm. Weird, entertaining, and another film I almost certainly would never have encountered without VS.

The Demon Rat is a wonderfully strange VSA oddity: Mexican eco-horror, mutated-rat creature feature, melodrama, action, and apocalyptic sci-fi all fighting for space in the same movie. The near-future setting gives it a fun grimy atmosphere, with acid rain warnings, environmental collapse, corporate greed, and a giant rat problem all wrapped around Irina’s messy personal situation. It is low-budget and a little unruly, but that is also why it stands out. The 2K scan from the 16mm original camera negative looks far better than I ever expected something this obscure to look, and the original Spanish track with newly translated subtitles is appreciated. The Galindo Jr. , Rossana San Juan, and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez interviews add solid context. A weird, very welcome monster-movie rescue.

Sold out though after a warehouse clearance they managed to find a couple more, which is when i bought it. Was it worth it?

If you like films like Bruno Mattei's Rats but with a Mexican touch, this low budget, misty-shot post apocalyptic monster movie hits the spot. The effects are cool though cheap and the action and pace are up to snuff.

Great restoration while maintaining the grit, cool extras.

Fun film. Good video quality.
