Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

Considered one of the first true fly-fishing films, Tarpon brings together famed American authors Richard Brautigan, Tom McGuane, and Jim Harrison with legendary flats guides Woody Sexton, Gil Drake, and Steve Huff as they muse about life, art, nature, and fishing the majestic Tarpon.

Shot in the wild panorama of 1970s Key West, the tarpon fishing and stunning cinematography transports the viewer to another era – a time and place where the line between philosopher, scoundrel, hippie, and eccentric was nearly indiscernible.  Accompanied by original music composed for the film by a then up-and-coming young musician named Jimmy Buffet, and narrated by Jim Harrison from his own text, this 4K restoration from negatives rescued from a barn in Normandy in 2008 marks the first time TARPON is available to audiences in HD.

Must-see if you love short, strange docs

"As much its own artwork as it is a true documentary, it really captures a slice of time and a fleeting mindset that both comes with fishing and time spent just getting weird with your friends on the rare times you're all together. The section about knowing the value of something only after it passes hits that much harder when you know the speaker's ultimate fate."

A Future Rarity

"This will become a valuable release in the future. Was a very unusual and obscure documentary that feels very reminiscent on something we would have had on tape in Australia from Starbase Video. Love it. Brilliant artwork too"

Billy-Jack D. (5/5)

Florida History on Film

"I’m always going to be a sucker for Florida on film and this is no exception. Hard to believe we almost lost this one, and it feels so utterly important in every way."

Thomas N. (5/5)

A vibrant, relaxing getaway

"Total aura blind buy, mainly for the zenith tranquility and early jimmy buffet score. This is a cool film. I love it. Shows a satire on us as society and the peace of mother nature. A must buy!"

Nathan H. (5/5)

Tarpon

"The Blu-Ray is great. It is beautiful. The art on this cover is what drew me to it. I have even reached out to the artist about a print, but to no avail. I amreally excited I found this website. I have already scoped out anther couple of purchases."

Back when the Dolphins actually won playoff games

"A very cool peak into 70s Florida. Amazing artwork on the slip!"

Corey A. (5/5)

Charming slice of the 70’s

"Awesome documentary that transports you to a unique time and place in America. A must watch for fishermen and slackers alike!"

I hate assholes, usually adorned

"I hate assholes, usually adorned with the broccoli hairstyle, that go around and say things "are a vibe. " But I'm close to being said asshole, minus the hair. . . or any hair at all up there, because I don't know what other terms apply to this film. It felt akin to watching Pure Moods ads late at night as a kid but with much better photography. A nice reminder that there's a big, beautiful world out there and all I seem to be able to see is the ugly, internet obsessed sludge areas filled with broken people who are also just seemingly existing to pay off debt."

Dustin B. (4/5)

Tarpon, tarpoff

"A unique snapshot of a bygone time and place in American history with some gorgeous shots of the Keys. The commercial fishing section is a little hard to watch, but I understand why it's there. Easy recommend to anyone looking for a nature documentary or the early sounds of one Jimmy Buffett."

Tyler M. (5/5)

Gorgeous Doc

"Fascinating little documentary with some stunning sections of cinematography. Essential Florida Keys cinema."
