Goofy but very fun love triangle period piece
"SHANGHAI BLUES (1984) is a screwball rom-com with lots of over the top physical gags. Because it's Tsui Hark it's, of course, visually inventive and full of political (sub)text. There's some dated humor, but it's mostly charming. Sally Yeh is the MVP in this goofy love triangle period piece."

Great film. Not-so-perfect edition.
"I think this is a great film, a rom-com/screwball comedy that, while very different from What’s Up Doc? kind of fills that same void for me. I found the video quality to be good for the most part. My only issue with this release is the included dub, which I found distracting at times. For me, the film is good enough to get past this, but it could be a deal breaker for some people."

Gorgeous Tsui Hark 4k
"This 4k release of Tsui Hark's screwball style comedy is a welcome entry into the spate of recent flood of Hong Kong film releases. Gorgeously restored, featuring a commentary and interviews as well as a booklet, this is a must-see!"

Another Tsui Hark 4K!
"The 4K restoration looks amazing and such beautiful vibrant artwork on the slipcover. After watching Peking Opera Blues, I had high expectations for this film, but the comedy aspects of this film felt a bit underwhelming. Still worth a watch for the chaos and charismatic highs"

I love this film but
"I love this film but the 4K presentation is underwhelming. A lot of DNR was used for the transfer and the director decided to replace the original sound with a new dub. These aren’t the faults of Film Movement though. They did a nice job and the Frank Djeng commentary is excellent as always."

Everybody Gets The Blues
"Shanghai Blues is a lively romantic comedy that blends wartime longing with playful, almost screwball-style humor. Tsui Hark brings a vibrant energy to the film, balancing heartfelt moments with inventive visual gags. It’s charming, fast-paced, and full of personality, making it an easy and enjoyable watch."

Charming HK Rom-Com
"This movie was a pretty good rom-com that centers around the story of a young man who meets the person he believes is the love of his life but he met her when it was dark and he couldn't really see her. He eventually meets her again years later but does not know it, and a love triangle develops. It ended up being a good story and the actors pulled off some good performances. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend giving it a watch."

Shanghai Blues
"Shanghai Blues (1984), directed by Tsui Hark and starring Sally Yeh and Kenny Bee, is a buoyant, fast-moving romantic comedy that blends wartime melodrama with screwball chaos and musical flair. Set against the backdrop of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the film follows two would-be lovers separated by circumstance and reunited through a series of coincidences and misunderstandings, giving Tsui Hark plenty of room to play with timing, rhythm, and visual gags. The film’s energy is relentless—packed with slapstick, wordplay, and sudden tonal shifts—yet it never loses sight of its emotional core, balancing its absurdity with genuine warmth. While the plot occasionally borders on convoluted, the charm of its performances and the director’s inventive staging make it feel effortless. It’s a lively, affectionate homage to classic romantic comedies, filtered through Tsui Hark’s uniquely exuberant sensibility."

I saw the name Taui
"I saw the name Taui Hark and I'm like this is a must purchase so I bought it. Then I read it was a romantic comedy and I'm like fuck, my least favorite type of film, but I was way surprised. There are some really funny scenes and for a genre I hate this was great. Very pleasantly surprised. This release looks fantastic, the 4K disc has excellent picture quality. Happy I gave this a chance."
