Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark period in her life: her father, a famous artist, has recently died, and on the heels of his death she's dumped by her boyfriend James. Looking to recuperate, Catherine heads out to her best friend Virginia's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some much needed relaxation. Tranquility eludes her, however, as she's instantly overcome with memories of time spent at the same house with James the year before. Moreover, she finds no solace from Virginia, who is spending increasing amounts of time with a local love interest, Rich (Patrick Fugit). Before long fissures in the relationship between the two women begin to form, sending Catherine into a downward spiral of delusion and madness. A bracing, eerie look at the sometimes dangerously deep bonds of friendship, QUEEN OF EARTH is a thrilling examination of a troublingly complex relationship.

    SKU: IFC-001 SLIP

"I enjoyed Alex Ross Perry's punk rock drama "Her Smell", also starring Elisabeth Moss, quite a lot. So I gave this a shot as well. Once again the plot revolves around the psychological breakdown of a woman, but this is much more of Horror adjacent film. It owes a lot to Ingmar Bergman's films and Altman's "Three Women", and I'm a huge fan of both. Moss' performance is outstanding - what an actress! The transfer is very good, after all it's only 10 years old. I haven't checked out the extras yet."

Quiet study of one person’s disintegration, fascinating chamber piece.

"If you ever want to see the limits of friendship tested to their absolute measure, watch this film. It’s a quiet study of one person’s disintegration hauling in the person in her life that cares the most about her. The acting is superb, measured and effective, a quiet intensity. Its’ narrative, I’m not much impressed with - there’s a lot (a lot) of talking, and while some of it is insightful, most of it stays face-value. The cinematography and score assist with sussing out those unspoken aspects, and at least the guys are cute. The extras on the blu-ray are engaging - the conversation with the composer is especially charming - and the enclosed booklet has a helpful essay plus some stills from the film."

    Psychological Thriller

"Queen of Earth is a tightly wound psychological thriller that uses intimacy and isolation to unsettling effect. The film follows Catherine, an emotionally fragile woman retreating to a lake house with her longtime friend Virginia, only for their simmering resentments and shifting power dynamics to erode the boundary between support and hostility. It’s a story driven less by plot than by mood, performance, and the slow unravelling of a mind under pressure."

    Not My Tea

"Movie: Maybe this resonates with other people more, but I definitely didn't get a lot out of it. The first hour or so is very slow and I could barely hear most of the dialogue underneath the score. Maybe that's the point? Maybe you're not supposed to catch what the characters are saying and that represents how disconnected they are? Either way, having that running through my mind because I wasn't getting enough from the movie wasn't particularly satisfying. A good ending might have made the lead up worth it, but although there was a point where I focused back in because _thing were actually happening now_, overall I was left w/ just a few memorable scenes, or a couple of laughs like "Ha! Fuck you, cup!". Also, this movie has the most pretentious ending credits I've ever seen. I appreciate doing something new w/ credits but I could not really enjoy them after having sat through the movie. Then I watched the trailer included on the disc and it was even _more_ pretentious. 🙄 Extras: The composer extra was fine. I liked the video essay, perhaps _because_ it was mostly about other movies. BTS footage is a good length (not too long). I appreciate having the trailer, despite feeling like it's pretty pretentious. Book: An interesting take on the movie. Will give me something to focus on if I'm ever forced to watch this again. Packaging: Kind of a boring slip over TBH. Inner cover is better, but not reversible."

    Queen

"I was a little turned off after seeing ARP’s THE COLOR WHEEL years ago, but he’s grown on me as a filmmaker, and this is definitely a film of his I enjoy."

    nice edition for the library

"I wasn't too crazy about QUEEN OF EARTH when it came out but something told me I should pick it up for later reference. I was right! Strange, psycho-dramatic, stressful, horrifically non-horror character piece in a nice BD that represents the 16mm photography well. I missed the slip but that original cover is the real version for me."

    Isaac W. (4/5)

    Alex Ross Perry's best film?

"Better edition than the UK Masters of Cinema of an already great filmmaker. Up there with Alex Ross Perry's best. Certainly the best performances of any of his films. Like a lo-fi Persona. Arthouse-tinged horror that's beautifully shot."
