LIFELINE is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT; Aurora, CO and Toronto, ON!

Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This slipcase edition (designed by Tony Stella) is strictly limited to 5,000 units and may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

Yau Sui is an arrogant firefighter working at a tight-knit Hong Kong fire station where he and his fellow firefighters believe their station is cursed due to the constant hardships they must face. Yau Sui struggles with trying to rise in the ranks of his department and his skill as a leader becomes challenged when a new senior officer is transferred to their station. In the meantime, Yau Sui sparks a relationship with a troubled doctor and he, like the rest of his fellow firefighters, struggles to maintain a balance between his personal and professional life. However, the drama comes to a head when a catastrophic five-alarm fire in a chemical plant forces Yau Sui and the other firefighters to put aside their differences and work together in an attempt to break their station's curse.

LIFELINE, described by many as Hong Kong's answer to Backdraft, is masterfully directed by one of Hong Kong's most celebrated filmmakers, Johnnie To (The Heroic Trio, PTU). Focussing heavily on the personal lives of the characters, the film succeeds by not only being a strong study of the hardships firefighters must endure, but by also delivering intense stunt-filled action sequences, culminating in a nearly 45-minute non-stop climactic fire sequence. Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to present LIFELINE on 4K UHD for the first time, newly restored from the original camera negative, featuring beautifully photographed and pulse-pounding fire sequences unlike any you've seen before.

Johnnie Lights It Up

"Johnnie To makes his Backdraft. It’s as great as that sounds."

Nick C. (5/5)

Lifeline

"Johnnie To's Lifeline consists of lurid melodrama and action. The melodrama is corny and cliche. However, the fiery action is truly a marvel. I have no idea how the scenes were filmed; but it often appeared that the actors were placed in great peril. The action scenes make the film worth watching, and some of the characters provide a rooting interest. The picture looks stunning and pristine in 4K."

Jesse Z. (4/5)

Better than Backdraft!

"Johnnie To proves yet again why he is one of HKs finest directors. Things can be a bit melodramatic in the first half, but the entire third act is an adrenaline rush of fire that is unmatched!"

Another VSA winner

"Let’s face it: The VSA line is often pretty hit or miss depending on what you may be looking for or expect. And that’s one of my favorite things about it. This is one I had never heard of and I’m glad I bought on sale for a blind buy."

Keith M. (5/5)

Lifeline

"Lifeline is a tense and engaging film that keeps its focus tightly on human stakes and emotional urgency. The strong performances ground the suspense, making each turn feel impactful and earned. It’s a compelling watch that blends drama and tension into a satisfying, resonant experience."

Jeffrey W. (5/5)

Real fire on film! Remember that!

"Hollywood action, Hong Kong style. You’ve got to admire an entirely synth score on a tenth of the budget, going for all the pounding tension and sweeping heroics of high octane benchmarks like Speed and The Rock; inspirations that are blatantly mimicked. And although half the film is in fact a workplace melodrama about a squad of firefighters seemingly cursed with bad luck, all the interpersonal subplots are shot with the rushing angles of an action sequence and given the same editorial urgency. And of course, all this is helped exponentially by shooting with real fire elements, requiring no suspension of disbelief to feel a sense of danger, which hangs over every battle with a blaze—particularly an extended finale, where everything goes not as planned and there’s always another dire development. Because of the way this is made, it’s a relic from another time that will never be again in the best possible way."
