“I do not care if we go down in history as barbarians” - these were the words spoken by Romania’s military dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu in the Council of Ministers in the summer of 1941 that started the ethnic cleansing on the Eastern Front.
One of contemporary Europe's most distinctive creators, Jude has come out with an ingeniously conceived film. While it unfolds slowly and in detail, it hits the viewer with a singular emotional punch.
“I DO NOT CARE IF WE GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS BARBARIANS” chronicles a young theatre director’s efforts to stage an accurate re-enactment of the Odessa Massacre - in which Romanian soldiers slaughtered tens of thousands of Ukrainian Jews - despite the municipal government’s attempt to censor the director’s efforts. Her choice angers a city official who threatens to close the production because of its “anti-Romanian” take on history. However, the reaction to the staged play is one that neither anticipated. This internationally- acclaimed dark satire is a timely statement about the consequences of selective and willful amnesia on a society fueled by populist sentiments.

A harrowing farce
"The hateful barbarism of the Odessa massacre giving way decades later to the joyful barbarism of treating such an atrocity as public theater. A well-executed and angry farce by Jude but the arguments between Mariana, her cast, and the representative hit so close to home after all the similar arguments I've heard in the past decade—confronting the sins of the nation is anti-[insert nation here], "Never again!", whataboutism, treating genocide death counts as contest, etc. —that laughter was slim from me. And Mariana halfheartedly skimming through the book on Herero at the end simply yet effectively sums up the common attitude of apathy for atrocities occurring countries or whole oceans away when meaningfully confronting her own country's bloody history is clearly still a problem."

"Movie: A lot of the most memorable parts feel like a history lecture, albeit a fascinating one. Some of the debates also provided some crunchy ideas to ponder on. The meta nature of the movie was kind of a wash for me. There's the lesson of "no such thing as an anti-war movie", but the impact of the public's reaction is blunted by the artifice. Weird to think about how this one has aged. Extras: A little bit light, although the introduction was very good and set the movie's context well. Packaging: Bonus points for reversible cover. The slipcover design is nice."
