Few filmmakers working in British genre cinema had more memorable careers than Lindsay Shonteff. The Canadian ex-pat produced an incredibly diverse body of work during his few decades spent toiling on the fringes of England’s low-budget film community. Still, few of his films have developed a wider - and more deserved - fan base than his set of 60s horror-shockers made for legendary producer Richard Gordon (Horror Hospital): DEVIL DOLL and CURSE OF THE VOODOO. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to offer both of these true cult classics, newly scanned and restored from their camera negatives in 4K and on Blu-ray for the first time.

Acclaimed magician The Great Vorelli dazzles audiences with his mastery of hypnosis while shocking them with a strange ventriloquist dummy named Hugo. Determined to uncover Vorelli’s methods for making Hugo’s movement and speech appear so real, reporter Mark English begins a covert investigation. However, nothing can prepare him for the strange and horrifying secret trapped inside the dummy, nor for the murderous actions it will take to be freed... Integrating the supernatural into a twist-filled story of revenge, DEVIL DOLL stars Bryant Haliday (Tower of Evil), William Sylvester (Gorgo), and Yvonne Romain (Night Creatures) and is presented in its “Continental” version, which has never before been seen complete and uncut on video!

Mike Stacey is a cold-blooded guide to novice big game hunters. While on safari in Africa, he has to clean up the mess of one of his clients, shooting a lion they wounded but couldn't kill. But no sooner than moving in to collect the body is he accosted by the local tribesmen who reveal that the lion is their deity and that any man who dares interfere will suffer unimaginable torments. Upon returning to England, Mike is besieged by unrelenting nightmares and a paranoid sense that he’s being watched, chased, and hunted like the animals he preys upon. As he descends further into madness, he realizes that the only way he can break the curse is by returning to Africa and again facing the deadly tribe... A 1960s update of Jungle adventure and horror films of the 1930s and 40s, CURSE OF THE VOODOO (aka Curse of Simba) again stars Bryant Haliday, Dennis Price (The Earth Dies Screaming), and Lisa Daniely (Lili Marlene).

Insanity by all means!

"Including both cuts of Devil Doll was a win win for me!"

Hello Dolly!

"Great to see more British titles in the VS collection. Devil Doll has been languishing on DVD for 25 years, so it's great to finally get this weird little gem on high-definition! The restoration, I feel, is great, easily up to VS's previous black + white presentations, which is very, very good indeed! Bonus points for including Shonteff's Curse of the Voodoo! Highly recommended!"

Aneurin M. (5/5)

The Creepy Devil Sleazy Doll

"The Devil Doll is a very good movie, with creepy moments and a few touches of sleaziness (unfortunately, the ‘clothed’ scenes are included only as extras and not in a complete alternative version, as they were on the old DVD)."

Devil Doll

"Second best Dummy Ventriloquist film ever made (2nd to Dead Of Night 1945). Curse Of The Voodoo is only so so but nice to have as an extra. Great transfer and packaging."

Top Marks for Shonteff Horror Duo

"This is a superb presentation of two low budget early 1960s British horrors, both fully deserving of the excellent commentary tracks each gets. The archival Weaver / Gordon commentary is also on there and VS gets extra points for porting that over from the old DVD release. Good to see DEVIL DOLL has the nude scenes included in the integral cut with the clothed alternatives as extras. Both transfers are very good and for fans of the 'Merton Park' level of British moviemaking this is an essential purchase"

"Cult British horror commentary from Kim Newman can't go wrong with this release"

Chucky's daddy???

"This super-low budget Brit horror plays like a (surprisingly) trashy remake of the ventriloquist's dummy chapter of the much more respectable DEAD OF NIGHT. I've watched a lot of "killer doll" movies, and this is the only one to make me wonder if maybe Don Mancini got some inspiration for Chucky from it. There's two cuts, and the version I watched is decidedly depraved for 1964, with lots of nudity and even some shocking pervy moments from the dummy. I can't imagine the movie being that interesting with all that stuff thrown out, and since this once played on Mike Nelson's MST3K, I can only imagine they used that watered-down cut (which feels on-brand for that era of the show). Maybe the most notable thing about this movie (and the accompanying feature, which I haven't watched yet) is that the creepy ventriloquist is played by Bryant Haliday, who has a memorable screen presence that's like a middle point between Laurence Harvey and Vincent Price (and a touch of Valentine Dyall in the voice). He only ever acted in a handful of low-budget horrors like this, but off-camera, he was the co-founder of Janus Films!!! So glad VS has lovingly preserved this bizarro bit of film history."

Who Do Voodoo Like They Do?

"Two features with performances that boggle the mind and one with an ending too bizarre not to love, you'll love these films like a ventriloquist dummy loves ham!"

William Z. (5/5)

Interesting classic double feature.

"Interesting classic double feature."
