From arthouse to Canuxploitation, Canadian International Pictures (CIP) is devoted to resurrecting vital, distinctive, and overlooked triumphs of Canadian cinema. This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing CIP's brand new line of home video releases!

50th anniversary special edition

15-year-old Buckley (Adventures in Rainbow Country’s Buckley Petawabano) is coming of age torn between two worlds: his stifling experience in a residential school and his hunger for the old traditions of the reserve. But when he returns to visit his family over summer break, his distance from their way of life – and even the Cree language – is painfully apparent. During a disastrous stint living with a white foster family, Buckley deepens his bond with Johnny (King of the Grizzlies star Johnny Yesno), a caretaker at the school who becomes a bridge to Indigenous history and community. Despite this fleeting connection, Buckley grows increasingly disaffected, and his alienation begins to sow the seeds of personal tragedy.

Loosely inspired by the haunting true story of Anishinaabe boy Chanie “Charlie” Wenjack, the sole fiction feature from National Film Board of Canada documentary veteran Martin Defalco is both deeply empathetic and bracingly unsentimental. Featuring a supporting performance by Chief Dan George (Little Big Man) and several songs by celebrated musician-filmmaker Willie Dunn, Cold Journey remains an essential and withering portrait of Canada’s now-infamous residential school system and its devastating impact on First Nations youth.

A Stark, Introspective Exploration of Isolation and Survival

"Cold Journey is a slow-burning drama that immerses viewers in themes of solitude, endurance, and personal reflection. The story follows a protagonist navigating harsh environments—both physical and emotional—highlighting resilience, vulnerability, and the human capacity to confront challenges alone. Cinematography emphasizes the starkness of the landscape, using wide shots and natural lighting to underscore the feeling of isolation. The pacing is deliberate, allowing moments of quiet introspection to resonate and giving the audience space to reflect alongside the character. Performances are understated and nuanced, conveying inner struggle without melodrama. Cold Journey is a meditative, atmospheric film that rewards viewers who appreciate contemplative storytelling, character-driven narratives, and the subtle poetry of human endurance."

Looks incredible, great special features

"Thoroughly engaging film. The transfer looks incredible, too. The 4 short films in the special features / extras are fascinating, also."

Donald M. (5/5)

Still Timely

"Cold Journey is a quietly powerful and poignant drama about a young Indigenous boy torn between the world of his Cree heritage and the pressures of a forced residential school system. Its unvarnished storytelling and deeply human central performance make the protagonist’s search for identity and belonging genuinely affecting. While its pacing feels gentle and reflective, the emotional resonance and cultural insight make it a memorable and important watch."

Shawn M. (4/5)
