The Tall Grass Country Club offers its members a luxury getaway, with all the best in sport and relaxation. But when a mangled body is discovered on the club’s prized golf course, right before a nationally televised tournament, panic ensues at the possibility of a killer on the loose, and even worse, that the death might cause some bad press. Enlisting the expertise of Roy, a has been golf pro, along with disgruntled pro-hopeful, Kelly, to unmask the culprit behind the carnage, the club’s hard nosed owner soon finds himself with even bigger problems when additional victims begin to turn up, and all signs point to the killer being an out of control, bloodthirsty lawn mower!

A highly original send up of Jaws, from the makers of Girls School Screamers, Thomas R. Rondinella’s BLADES is goofy, gory, and more than a little bit absurd. Vinegar Syndrome presents the worldwide Blu-ray debut of this Tromatic classic, freshly restored in 2K from its 35mm original negative and featuring an in-depth making-of documentary.

Reviews

Dreadfully unfunny

"Dreadfully unfunny parody of Jaws. Just beat for beat with lawnmower instead of a shark. No one makes jokes. Did the filmakers ever watch a parody (eg Airplane) to see how it's done? Basically a kids film until 2 short gore scenes which are the exact same effect duplicated. So that rules out the kiddies. . . who was this movie for? Commentary is mainly the filmakers explaining what's on screen and laughing like they've made a masterpiece."

Blades (1989) is a masterpiece

"Blades (1989) is a masterpiece of cinematic stupidity. It doesn’t just reference Jaws; it skins it alive and wears its hide while driving a possessed lawnmower. If you’ve ever looked at a fairway and thought, "This needs more blood and less par," this Troma-distributed gem is your hole-in-one."

Jaws parody done right.

"Synopsis: The golfers at the Tall Grass Country Club are in a world of danger when a giant rogue lawnmower literally mows them down and it's putting the annual televised tournament in jeopardy. Recently acquired Golf Pro Roy Kent, who was kicked from the big circuit due to alcohol, teams up with the previous pro and now jealous Kelly Lange to try and find out what they are dealing with. To tackle a beast this big the two have to bring in big lawnmower hunter and local crackpot Deke Slade to get the job done. Review: An excellent parody of Jaws with direct "homages" that are taken seriously despite being completely absurd. This is a very fun watch especially if you are a Jaws fan. My main criticism is that there is very little gore. A killer lawnmower demand satiation with gallons of blood. Carnage Count 2/5 Sleaze Score 1/5"

Jaws on a Golf Course

"In the exclusive, fancy and uptight Tall Grass golf club, bloody leftovers of nightly intruders as well as of loyal club members are found barbarically hacked up. This means bad publicity for the upcoming golf tournament, so resort owner Osgood is quite relieved when the angry mob captures former caretaker Deke Slade as the maniacal culprit. However, resident golf instructors Roy and Kelly correctly assume something much larger, diabolical and superhuman is on a rampage here. All I ever read about this late 80s horror comedy is that it's a re-enactment of Spielberg's ultimate summer classic "Jaws". And that's true, of course. The parallel sequences, loving tributes and unsubtle references are unmistakably there. What you almost never read, though, is that "Blades" also parodies a large number of other classic cult movies. The uncontrollable murderous device is a machine with a will of its own, which automatically reminds me of "The Terminator". The setting, the cast of characters and many of the situational humor also almost makes it feel like a "Caddyshack" sequel. And a better one than the official "Caddyshack II", for that matter. There's even a guy with a hokey mask named Jason, so you certainly can't claim the writers of "Blades" don't know their landmarks. Maybe because the film was distributed by the questionable Troma studios, maybe because there already was an overload of low-budget slashers throughout the late 80s, or maybe just because of bad luck; but I personally feel that "Blades" is an underrated horror comedy. It's cheesy and badly acted, for sure, but the concept is really fresh and inventive. Numerous sequences are also downright hilarious, like the redneck mob setting out a manhunt, or Deke's emotional flashback speech. Only the gore should have been slightly more outrageous, perhaps."
