Cool VSA
"Another really solid martial arts film from the VSA line. In addition to the film, you get some special features and a small booklet that includes an essay. If you are a martial arts fan, this is well worth picking up."

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. In late 15th century China, “The Master,” a Taoist priest, has been destined to fight the Japanese “Demon King;” a vengeful spirit who has power over the forest. The Demon King has fallen in love with a woman named Gigi and forces her to be his bride. As The Master begins his fateful battle with the Demon King, they’re unexpectedly thrust into a time vortex which transports them 500 years into the future to modern-day Hong Kong wherein they discover Gigi’s reincarnation, who is being terrorized by her vicious ex-boyfriend, Ben.
Skillfully blending fantasy and wuxia with touches of horror, Thomas Yip’s AN ETERNAL COMBAT is a thrilling and fast-paced rarity which stars Ching-Ying Lam (Mr. Vampire), Joey Wang (A Chinese Ghost Story), along with legendary character actor, Anthony Wong (Ebola Syndrome) playing the type of deranged psychotic for which he would become famous. Packed with thrilling sword fights, death-defying stunts, along with laser-shooting weaponry and black magic, Vinegar Syndrome Archive is delighted to present the Blu-ray debut of this Hong Kong hidden gem, presented in a new restoration.

"Another really solid martial arts film from the VSA line. In addition to the film, you get some special features and a small booklet that includes an essay. If you are a martial arts fan, this is well worth picking up."
"This film has a similar structure to Masters of the Universe and Beastmaster 2. It begins in the distant past of a fantasy version of China and ends up in modern 1991. Personally, I would have preferred that the entire film had taken place in the fantasy world, but it has a pretty strong beginning/ending with the middle being enjoyable enough to hold my interest."
"Put this off for too long. Really fun HK action movie. Definitely similar to Iceman Cometh but still unique enough."
"Cue the industrial techno beat. “Eternal Kombat!” Never been into the fish out of water time traveler trope, and when you already have a martial arts film as good as The Iceman Cometh doing the best possible version of this tonal soup just a couple of years earlier, this was always going to pale in comparison—though you can’t tell from a highly stylized, filtered and colour-gelled, high fantasy opening, with a breathtaking, introduction and series of shots setting up Joey Wang’s character, soon to be turned into a demon. Unfortunately, the rest of the film is never able to match the energy of how it begins. I could look at Joey Wang for eternity though. Wish this one had a commentary track. Love the artwork, though supplements are bare bones."
"The awesome slipcover perfectly captures the spirit of this excellent flick! The plot is engaging and the portrayals are uniformly excellent throughout! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"
"The presentation of this release alone feels special, from the beautifully designed packaging to the hand‑written numbering that really underscores the care behind this limited edition. The sturdy booklet and included poster make it an easy standout in my collection. Always forget about Anthony Wong’s brief but memorable cameo portrayal of Ben, and thankfully there is an interview with him that is a fantastic bonus. This is the kind of release that celebrates this film’s spirit while giving collectors something truly worth cherishing."
"Eternal Combat is a chaotic blend of martial arts action, supernatural fantasy, and low-budget ambition, the kind of offbeat genre hybrid that developed a cult following through late-night VHS discovery. The film throws together rival fighters, mystical forces, and over-the-top confrontations into a narrative that often feels secondary to its energetic set pieces and eccentric tone. What makes it memorable isn’t polish, but its unpredictability—jumping between styles and ideas with a scrappy creativity that gives it a distinct charm for fans of obscure action cinema. The Blu-ray release from Vinegar Syndrome under its Vinegar Syndrome Archive line treats the film like a rediscovered oddity worth preserving. Presented in a new high-definition transfer with the label’s usual attention to detail, the disc also comes in the signature VSA oversized clamshell packaging, aimed squarely at collectors. Extras are typically curated to give context—often including commentary tracks or interviews—though the focus remains on highlighting the film as a cult artifact. As with many VSA titles, the appeal lies as much in the presentation and rarity as in the film itself, making it a niche but appealing release for genre enthusiasts."
"Hong Kong cinema at is best. This a less known gem. I bought it on impulse on a sale and I was amazed at how good it was. I really like the cover too. Picture and audio quality is brilliant and that is a huge plus."
"Fantasy and amazing wire work combine in this thrillride, a treat for fans of '90s Hong Kong visual bravoura. In terms of release quality, again VSA scores big with this."
