Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome's Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

New York City, 1979: working class Jersey City teenager Shane (Ryan Phillippe, Cruel Intentions) becomes infatuated with Studio 54, a lavish Manhattan nightclub known for decadence. Shane’s time at 54 introduces him to a cast of characters including real life nightclub owner Steve Rubell (Mike Myers, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery), busboy Greg (Breckin Meyer, Clueless), coat checker Anita (Salma Hayek, Traffic), and actress Julie (Neve Campbell, Scream).

Written and directed by Mark Christopher, 54 was originally heavily re-shot ahead of its theatrical release in 1998 before being re-assembled in a long awaited director’s cut in 2015, with over forty minutes of different footage used. Anchored by an impressive, star-making, performance from Ryan Phillippe along with a bombastic, period appropriate soundtrack, 54 is an essential ode to old New York that’s ripe for re-discovery. Cinématographe is proud to present the definitive release of 54, including a new 4K restoration of the 1998 theatrical version as well as the 2015 director’s cut, offering an exemplary case study in how drastically different a film can be between two different edits.

Altman Gem

"Long unavailable on physical media, Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean finally got a BD/DVD release in 2014 from Olive Films. This release from Cinematographe expands on that basic disc with a plethora of bonus including a beautifully insightful essay from Drew Burnett Gregory. A must-have!"

One of the best home video released of the year

"Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean has always been one of Robert Altman’s most underrated pictures. Along with Secret Honor and Streamers, it allows him to strip back everything from the frame except for the people in it. Not that his skill with actors was ever in doubt, but I don’t think he’s ever gotten the kind of naturalistic, unstudied performances that he’s achieved here. And the 4K set is stuffed with features that help put this little jewel of a movie into content."

Forgotten Altman

"A very special movie built like a one act play. Stunning performances. The burn is slow, but worth it."

Alex B. (5/5)

One of the best films ever made

"This is in my top 10 films of all time. You have the brilliance of Robert Altman behind the camera directing the broadway play. You have legends in front of the camera - my biggest kudos go to Sandy Dennis who was robbed an Oscar for this, and Karen Black who never does wrong. Add in Cher (who’s stellar), Kathy Bates and Nightmare on Elm Street 2 scream queen Mark Patton, and you have pure perfection. Do not sleep on this - with a beautiful transfer and amazing book and essays, it’s the best cinematographe title."

If I had a dime for every 5…

"Robert Altman is a cinematic icon. He may not have a flawless filmography, but with an output like his it is hard to hit every single time. 5 and Dime is a hit. Especially if you like dialogue heavy, essentially, filmed plays. Great performances all around. Much love to Mark Patton!!"

Matthew G. (5/5)

A classic stage play brought to life by Robert Altman.

"This is an excellent restoration of Robert Altman's movie version of the play of the same name. An interesting and thoughtful emotional boiler of a drama as a reunion amongst friends goes quite differently than they expected. Worth seeing for the acting and the emotional payoff."

Come Back to the 5 & Dime

"Have not had a chance to watch this yet, a big pile of to be watched. Love the cinematographe packing. Really like they have been including TCM intros to some of the movies as well"

Matthew F. (5/5)

Robert Altman at his best

"Altman gets the most out of the 3 female leads (Sudie Dennis, Karen Black, and Cher) in this movie about James Dean’s death. This movie was first a Broadway play, and the adaptation is easy when you bring aboard the same cast."

Nate B. (5/5)

My parents lived in Indiana. This is the Indiana I know.

"Robert Altman’s Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean makes a wonderful companion piece to another Altman film Cinematographe has released, Thieves Like Us. Both are melancholy, deeply lived-in works that feel less like conventional narratives than somber tone poems about memory, regret, and the passage of time. The transfer is excellent, and the supplements provide valuable context for one of Altman’s most moving and underappreciated films. Boutique labels exist to preserve and champion movies exactly like this."

Robert Altman Indie Masterpiece Transfer for 16mm Unbelievable

"Loved the design of Quality Bound Book describing Cast, Film, Play. Transfer from Altman's original negatives left to UCLA Hollywood,Foreign Press decided. to restore. I have owned the blu ray that came out a few years. NO comparison. Altman shot in 16MM and to sueee clarity. Perfection. Cast all around suberb exspecially Cher and Karen Black. Also a young Kathy Bates. All reprised roles from the Broadway Play Altman 1st. Cinamatiqe bound both Blu ray on Ultra HD Blu Ray. Almost like a book with no expense spared for Book Binding. 1st trans film that did not treat character as monster, nut job or victim. Great intro by TCM Highlty recommend. Since film came out in 1982 I have seen at least 20 x's and alway find something new in performances and nuance. Ahead of it's time"
