In the midst of the European witch trials, a small Austrian town is subject to the sadistic whims of self-appointed witchfinder Albino, who inflicts torture and agonizing death on those he accuses of conspiracy with the Devil. But when the zealous Lord Cumberland arrives, along with his executioner and aristocratic young attendant Christian, to take over the responsibility of local witch-hunting, the town is plunged into even greater depths of terror and depravity as he metes out ever more brutal tortures on the populace, all in the name of God. As Lord Cumberland’s maniacal practices reach a fever pitch, and Christian’s would-be love interest, Vanessa, ends up as his latest target, Christian is thrown into a crisis of faith, as the perilous edge of violence draws ever closer.
The result of an intensely troubled production which saw British writer/director Michael Armstrong (House of the Long Shadows) virtually at war with producer, famed Austrian actor Adrian Hoven (Kiss Me Monster), MARK OF THE DEVIL became an immediate international hit, generating equal parts acclaim and condemnation, with the film being banned in the United Kingdom and promoted in the U.S. by infamous distributor Hallmark Releasing with vomit bags and the slogan “Rated V for Violence!” Featuring the first starring role for future genre icon Udo Kier (Flesh for Frankenstein), the film set a new benchmark for onscreen bloodshed with its graphic and unflinching portrayal of torture and dismemberment, culminating in the much-talked about tongue-ripping scene. Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to present the UHD world premiere of MARK OF THE DEVIL, restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative, in this extras-packed edition that’s sure to shock and appall moral crusaders everywhere!

Reviews
Definitive Release of a Classic
"Though not as good as Witchfinder General, Mark of the Devil is a fine romp, nicely made with a good deal of salacious and unpleasant content. I thought Arrow's release couldn't be topped, but this is a wonderful release, from the packaging, to the transfer, to the extras. Excellent."
— Kyle S. (4/5)
Great film, wonderful packaging.
"Absolutely love this depraved piece of work. One of my favorite of VS's slipcasess."
— Steven J. (5/5)
Solid Witch-hunting psycho thriller
"Clearly hyper violent for its time, now it seems somewhat quaint. It is a great exportation of the witch finders and how all of that was very corrupt. Overall, the movie is okay. Looks great in 4K."
— Jakob W. (4/5)
Before I discuss the movie,
"Before I discuss the movie, I have to say that this is one of the most beautiful releases in terms of packaging (box/slip) and artwork that I've ever purchased from Vinegar Syndrome. I enjoyed the movie itself and thought the picture looked terrific. The locations where this was filmed were pretty to look at and that offset the more brutal moments of the film. Highly recommended for folk horror fans who are late to the party like I was and a great release all around."
— Ryan S. (5/5)
Great movie
"Video quality is excellent with the HDR really making colours pop. Voices are clear and easy to understand. Subtitles are excellent as well. Definitely check it out."
— Nolan L. (5/5)
This was a fun one,
"This was a fun one, haha. Hunting some witches to make its way onto the video nasties list. As per usual, Vinegar Syndrome did an amazing job with the transfer and the packaging. Petunia approved!"
— Brandon M. (5/5)
Intense film with a great opening theme song
"Very intense film about the days of witch hunting and how it led to false accusations. Udo Kier is great, as is Herbert Lom, and Reggie Nalder. Great opening theme song that was also used in the movie Hobo With A Shotgun."
— Rene R. (5/5)
Grindhouse classic!
"This one was better than I expected. Surprisingly well acted and the plot was compelling."
— Sean M. (5/5)
"This is a heavy and fantastic psychological horror with a bunch of great acting and cruel scenes. The transfer is impeccable and the extras were a lot of fun!!"
— GILBERTO (4/5)
Mark of the Devil
"Disappointing that there is no insert, nothing. A booklet would have been nice. End of print media I guess where you have to get your info from the extras only."
— Charles W. (4/5)
