Southern Gothic with a Haunting Score

"Sister, Sister is an atmospheric Southern Gothic thriller combining family secrets, romance, psychological horror and touches of giallo. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Judith Ivey give strong performances, while the rain-soaked Louisiana setting creates a wonderfully dreamy and unsettling mood. The true highlight, however, is Richard Einhorn’s magnificent score. Its sweeping orchestral themes, eerie electronic textures and emotional melodies give the film much of its personality. The music is beautiful, mysterious and occasionally overwhelming in the best possible way, while the surprisingly active stereo mix surrounds the viewer with rain, thunder and the sounds of the bayou. Vinegar Syndrome’s 2K restoration preserves the intentionally soft, smoky cinematography while offering natural grain, attractive colors and a faithful film-like image. The commentaries, interviews and composer featurette make this another carefully produced release of an overlooked 1980s gem. A stylish and haunting film whose extraordinary music deserves special praise."
