Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

In her stunning, semi-autobiographical directorial feature debut, Asia Argento plays Anna Battista, a rising young actress who, despite her popularity and success, experiences despair and degradation at the hands of an abusive industry. Her harrowing journey towards redemption leads her on a sordid spree of excess across American and Europe while trying to recapture her innocence and find true love. Newly restored in HD, SCARLET DIVA has been rediscovered by audiences and critics alike in the wake of the "Time's Up" movement for its "full-throated rage against the international filmmaking machine" and is credited as "perhaps the earliest #MeToo film" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Reviews

Video diary of a sad girl

"If you're into Asia Argento this is a must-see. Awkward autobiiographical SOV directorial debut, compelling blend of technical crudeness and genuinely moving pathos. Some of the worst music ever on the soundtrack. Better than most movies."

Ryan M. (5/5)

A daring film

"A somewhat fictional autobiography by Asia Argento. Still a story about a fictional actress. To determine what is real and what is not, requires research on the part of the viewer. Fine Blu-ray transfer and fine packaging."

Carl L. (5/5)

exposes the industry

"Slughtly let down bu being shot on DV in my opinion but it does absolutely work as a polemic piece at the exact moment it was needed. Sort of proto-#metoo but with a lot of exploitation elements that dont quite fit. Filled with rage but also a lot of titilating scenes."

RICHARD L. (4/5)

Wild is the Wind

"A great experience. A tumultous ride through the underworld of the film industry. Semi autobiographical. Strong performances and lots of great extras. Highly recommended"

Hansi L. (5/5)

Another Argento

"Asia Argento’s Scarlet Diva is a raw, provocative semi-autobiographical plunge into the psyche of a young actress spiraling through fame, desire, and self-destruction. Written, directed, and starring Argento herself, the film blurs the line between confession and performance, capturing the chaos of early-2000s celebrity culture with unflinching intimacy. Shot on digital video with a feverish, guerrilla style, it’s both a cathartic outcry and a cinematic dare—filled with surreal interludes, explicit encounters, and moments of startling vulnerability. Though uneven and often abrasive, Scarlet Diva remains a bold feminist statement and a haunting precursor to the #MeToo reckoning that Argento would later become central to."

Indie Gem

"Asia has an interesting story to tell and this Blu-ray release is a worthy upgrade from the original dvd release"

Kyle B. (5/5)

Scarlet Diva

"The transfer is definitely a step up from the original DVD release from back in the day (just remember it was shot on video and there are some limitations on just how good a film like this will look, even as an upgrade) The audio is pretty solid. I’m a fan of the film and Asia, so while I definitely recommend SD, it might not be for everyone."

John P. (5/5)

Asia Argento flick that some might dig

"Asia Argento has created a blatantly autobiographical and at times painfully frank film about a young actress. The only thing I really liked about this film is the way it was shot kind of felt a bit like Inland Empire"
