MY FATHER IS A HERO is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT; Aurora, CO and Toronto, ON!

Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This slipcase edition (designed by Poochamin) is strictly limited to 4,000 units and may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

Gong Wei is an undercover cop living in mainland China. He is so deep undercover that his own wife and son don't even know he's a cop. After a mid-level gangster nicknamed Blackie is arrested, Wei is ordered by his superiors to help Blackie escape back to Hong Kong in an attempt to gain his trust and infiltrate his gang. When an arms deal goes wrong, Wei attracts the attention of a female Hong Kong detective named Anne Fong who begins investigating him. Things become more complicated for Wei when his own son soon ends up in danger and Wei has no choice but to team up with Anne in order to save his son and stop the gangsters from pulling off a deadly heist.

Released in America under the alternate title The Enforcer, MY FATHER IS A HERO teams up international martial arts superstar Jet Li (Once Upon a Time in China, Lethal Weapon 4) with renowned action director Corey Yuen (Righting Wrongs, The Transporter). Showcasing the lightning fast fight scenes and gravity-defying stunt work that Jet Li has become known for, MY FATHER IS A HERO also has an emotional storyline thanks in part to the performances by Anita Mui (Rumble in the Bronx) and child actor Tse Miu (Ip Man: The Awakening), who also has some impressive fight scenes of his own. Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to present this thrill-a-minute martial arts actioner on Blu-ray for the first time in America, newly restored from a studio-supplied 4K master, and featuring an insane fight where Jet Li's character uses his own son as a human weapon!

Wildly underrated VSA

"I'm surprised this VSA has lasted in stock so long. I thought this was pretty great, going beyond what I expected. The kid is great, the melodrama and pathos worked for me, and there are some bonkers moments in the action that bring a smile to my face just remembering while I type this review a few months later. Extras on disc are primarily interviews, which I enjoyed, but I want to go back and listen to the commentary track. Slipcase art is good (IMO), case art reverses to original art which is always appreciated. I'd swap the VSA posters for a guaranteed booklet, but nbd. Buy it!"

Unknown Jet Li gem?!? Sign me up.

"Anytime I find a Jet Li movie I’ve never seen I’ll absorb it like a sponge. But this movie surprised me with its hard hitting story and ever harder hitting fight scenes. This is an awesome find."

a Jet Li classic, finally on Blu-ray

"Really great to see this 90s Jet Li classic get the VSU treatment. I'm going to have to find a nice place to put this cool poster up. Fun movie, great cast, amazing stunt work."

Great blind buy

"I'm not knowledgeable about Asian films, so this was sort of a blind buy for me. As usual, the slipcover sells me - I checked some Letterboxd reviews, and bought it. Really great Jet Li movie, I would definitely recommend checking this out."

Nicholas D. (3/5)

Love the Hong Kong stuff

"Love the Hong Kong stuff and this is a great release. Awesome action and a wonderful restoration. Fantastic release!"

Jet at his fastest

"The timing, precision, coordination and pure speed of Jet Li in the fight scenes is staggering, even measured against the highlights of his incredible action run in the ‘90s. I’m yet to see the apex of this run, Fist of Legend, but I’ve no doubt that My Father is a Hero (as it’s titled on this beautiful looking 2K restoration from Vinegar Syndrome) is the most emotional of this set of films, going deep into childhood trauma, grief and loss, spending time getting you invested in the bonds of a loving, throughly decent family. Few action movies can deliver at such a high level and be equally effective dramatically. In this regard, it’s the best I’ve seen Li, as a devoted father pulled away from the ones he loves, and his performance works as well as it does for getting to play opposite Xie Miao, who is incredibly affecting as his son, and so impressively gets in on almost as much of the action. In a rare instance of sustained, serious child peril, we watch this pre-teen take out plenty of bad guys, but take plenty of licks in the process, as he’s smashed through glass tables, beaten down and choked. The father-son beatdown of the two of them in furious synch is a one-of-a-kind highlight, and all the action scenes are enhanced by the presence of Anita Mui, capably handling herself as an ass-kicker as always, despite no formal martial arts training."

My Father is a Hero ( aka The Enforcer) bluray review

"VSA is the Vinegar Syndrome sub-label that focuses on action/ home video store fare. They've released horror, sci-fi, action and now seem focused on Hong Kong / martial arts films. I've enjoyed what they've released so far and that continues with My Father is a Hero. Jet Li is a fantastic martial artist. Many of his films take place in the ancient/ wuxia time period. However, I personally enjoy the movies that take place in a modern setting. This martial arts masterpiece is directed by the great Corey Yuen. The plot and action are great. I was super excited to finally get this on bluray in America. The VS restoration looks fantastic. The disc comes stacked with deleted scenes, and a ton of interviews with producers and some of the cast. The VSA slipbox is gorgeous as usual. Check this one out!"
