"American Rapstar works best as a time capsule of that SoundCloud rap moment, when the scene felt half punk chaos and half internet fame machine. It is not the usual VS-style genre madness, but the behind-the-scenes footage and Justin Staple commentary make it an interesting partner-label pickup. I liked that it does not try to polish the culture too much. It feels messy, sad, funny and very tied to its specific moment."

"Pretty awesome to see a lot of this behind-the-scenes footage from the Soundcloud era. Follows a lot of rappers long enough to really see what it looks like to be a famous rapper at the time. Stays relatively shallow and makes some interesting choices in footage they choose to share, but overall, it's worth he watch."
