Reviews

The 80s are back in town!

"Summer of '84 is a tense thriller with horror ingredients wrapped in a coming-of-age package. . . and It is phenomenal. It's like the eighties kind of movies but with a grimm tons. The edition features a great transfer in 4k, that makes the movie see different from the usual scan of other "dark" films. Highly recommended."

Loved this!

"One of my favorite discoveries. Watched it two days in a row which I almost never do. Was surprised to see Rich Sommer who I only knew as a side character on the Office. Really clever and thrilling. Score is phenomenal!"

Summer of 84 is an

"Summer of 84 is an extremely clever take on the "kids go on a perilous adventure" films that were so popular in the 80's, but with a twist I dare not spoil here. The period details, excellent cinematography, synth score, and child performances are all noteworthy, but it's the direction of the narrative and accompanying tone that set this apart. Buckle in for this one. The 4K edition captures this in glorious fashion, highlighting the excellent night time lighting in particular. Bonus features are copious and juicy, with a great commentary track from the charming directing team (RKSS), interviews, storyboards, an amusing short film, etc. It's also worth mentioning how nice it is to receive a 4K UHD disc that plays with no errors straight out of the box, not requiring repeated attempts to wipe off residue from the manufacturing process. No one does it better than Vinegar Syndrome."

Summer of 84 4k review

"The streaming sleeper hit. I slept on this for a long time, glad I grabbed it, loved the film. Amazing 4k presentation and decent extras."

James K. (5/5)

Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine

"Same 80's nostalgia, kids-on-bikes setup as Stranger Things, but it trades sci-fi and supernatural elements for a grounded, darker serial-killer mystery. Really enjoyed this one!"

Tyler S. (5/5)

A typical but mostly enjoyable teenage summer mystery

"This film had nostalgia written all over it and really reminded me of stranger things. But not nearly as good. It had a very creepy essence to it but I still liked it. Worth a watch for sure"

Erik G. (4/5)

Summer of '84

"Nostalgic suburban horror with a surprisingly dark and effective payoff. It starts light but commits hard to its unsettling finale, which really sticks the landing. packed with features as usual and the scan is done very well."

Phil L. (5/5)

Like It but with a better ending

"Like It but with a better ending, Summer of 84 is the kind of genre cinema we need more of. Tense and unsettling it's a film that builds and builds towards an ending that comes out of left field and does away with genre expectation ending with one of the best downer finales in a long time. Sadly takes on a very different look and feel considering the crimes of one of the directors,"

I always love the unique VS service of allowing you to stack as many movies as you like in your cart during any release period and shipping them for free! Highly recommended!"

Paul K. (5/5)

Modern classic neighborhood watch slasher

"While Summer of 84 is a more recently produced film, the throwback setting and entire feel of the film calls back to some of the more fun 80s slashers that we know and love. Great casting, full of suspense, and high quality thriller sure to make it worthy of a repeat watch."
