After a two-year disappearance, free-spirited Alicja (screenwriter Gabriela Muskala) is reunited with her parents, husband and young son despite having no memory of them. Suddenly thrust back into a domestic life she has no recollection of choosing, Alicja struggles to reconcile her new and unfamiliar roles of dependability with the unshackled independence sprung by her recent mental break. With surreal, icy imagery and a seductively hypnotic atmosphere, director Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s (The Lure) sophomore feature burrows into the landscape of Alicja’s mind, excavating the societal burdens and duties expected of women, and whether personal freedom is truly attainable. Fugue evokes the social taboos around motherhood and the pressure on women to accept maternity without hesitation or reflection, as though the biological capacity of giving birth means that every woman should be willing to be a mother. A dizzying psychological puzzle of identity and self-discovery. Mesmerizing from the jaw-dropping first frame to the last.

"Love the slow burn of this creepy film."
"I absolutely loved The Lure, so I expected a similar experience and this was not that. However I’m excited to revisit it without such high expectations. Not much in the way of special features but I dig the packaging/artwork"
"If you enjoyed the vibe of Under the Skin and are a fan of Jonathan Glazer then you’ll dig it"
"Glad I grabbed this!"
"very cool followup to The Lure"
"so fun, awesome packaging and features!"
"Interesting Dekanalog release that is kind of a psychological dramatic thriller about a woman's departure from the traditional role of mother and the complete loss of her identity. Comes with a few extras and nifty artwork on the slipcover and sleeve."
"Very nice blind buy. It’s an intriguing slow burn. Slipcover looks really good and the transfer is great"
"A polish psychological drama following an amnesiac woman and her connections with her family. Writer/star Gabriela Muskala is great as we find out more about her character and what happened to her."
"Fugue, directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, is a haunting and thought-provoking psychological drama that explores themes of identity, memory, and the human experience. The film follows Alicja, a woman who loses her memory and returns to her life, only to find that she cannot remember who she is or connect with her past. As she tries to reclaim her former life, the lines between who she was and who she is now become increasingly blurred. The film is visually striking, with Smoczyńska's direction using a mix of dreamlike sequences and stark realism to create an unsettling atmosphere. The central performance by Gabriela Muskała is strong, capturing the emotional turmoil of a woman caught between two conflicting realities. The film’s slow pacing and introspective nature might not be for everyone, but for those who appreciate nuanced, contemplative stories about self and memory, Fugue is a compelling, emotional experience."
