The Film Desk is a theatrical and disc distributor founded in 2007 by Jake Perlin, dedicated to releasing masterpieces of international cinema, with a focus on titles never before released in the United States, or long out of circulation, primarily in new 35mm prints.

Three decades after the Spanish Civil War and Franco's fascist military coup, Communist operative Diego (Yves Montand) juggles multiple identities as he continues his dangerous missions, while reflecting on a life of political struggle. Though increasingly disillusioned, his determination to help a possibly captured comrade and chance encounter with impetuous student terrorist Geneviève Bujold, keep his commitment to the cause alive.

          Classic Resnais

"Never thought we’d get this Resnais in such a good package. Looks great!"

          Nick C. (5/5)

          The Wait is Over

"I've long wanted to see this film, and so am grateful for this release. Great quality, nice packaging, excellent booklet. The Film Desk knows what it is doing."

          Sean B. (5/5)

          Essential Alain Renais

"Essential Alain Renais, with the ever reliable Yves Montand as the lead. A political movie that delves into rich themes."

          Fabrice B. (5/5)

A weary, lucid political drama given new life

"Alain Resnais’ La guerre est finie is not a film of slogans but of fatigue — a portrait of an activist who has outlived his own certainty. It’s a talky, cerebral, beautifully disciplined piece of 1960s political cinema, and watching it in a clean restoration makes a huge difference: the faces, the streets, the sense of recession from history all feel newly legible. It’s the kind of release that actually changes how the film reads, not just how it looks."

          Thomas L. (5/5)

          Decent character study

"I found this character study of a long time revolutionary involved in some espionage against the Franco-ist Spanish government a decent watch. It's by no means a political screed, but it's also not a traditional espionage or spy story. There are some moments of actual tension, but not in the same way you usually see with this kind of story. The commentary track was illuminating and I liked the included booklet. On a technical aspect, I was disappointed that there are 5-10 moments in the film where the audio suddenly switches from French to Spanish, but there are no subtitles for the Spanish lines."

          Adam C. (3/5)

The War is Over (The bad guys won)

"If you are a fan of Renais or the French New Wave in general, then you absolutely need to acquire this first rate release of a forgotten beauty. The image quality of this restoration is fantastic, and I am stoked that I got this sight unseen."

          John D. (5/5)

          The more high quality Resnais

"The more high quality Resnais releases out there the better."

          Mike S. (5/5)

          Must have for Resnais Completists

"Stunning transfer and package for this often forgotten Resnais gem."

          Robert L. (5/5)

          Yes

"Is this French? It’s French. Please buy it"

          Scott D. (5/5)
