Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.

Scientist Joe Burke is determined to prove the existence of alien life and has set up a powerful radio telescope to look for signs. One night, after months of failure, he detects a clear but faint communication emerging from the deepest reaches of space. Excited by his findings, he rushes to his nearby research quarters. No sooner than arriving, the entire building, including its occupants, is lifted into space by a mysterious extraterrestrial force. After docking on a spacecraft, the frightened abductees realize that they have been selected to participate in a dangerous mission, the success of which will determine the fate and survival of Earth...

One of the strangest films to emerge from legendary British horror-focused company Amicus Productions, prolific quota-quickie director Montgomery Tully's (Fog for a Killer) penultimate film, THE TERRORNAUTS, is a delirious sci-fi fever dream of plywood spaceships and rubber & foam robots, which becomes increasingly hallucinogenic as it goes on. Featuring a cast of veteran stage and TV players, including Simon Oates (Doomwatch), Zena Marshall (Dr. No), Frank Forsyth (Tales from the Crypt), and Max Adrian (Dr. Terror's House of Horrors), Vinegar Syndrome Labs proudly brings this forgotten slice of 60s British B-movie making to Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored in 4K from its long-lost original 35mm camera negative and presented in the longest version ever featured on home video.

Reviews

Amicus

"Brimming with charmingly cheap plywood spaceship sets, rubber-and-foam monster suits, and hilariously goofy extraterrestrial intelligence tests, it is pure, unadulterated kitsch that will completely captivate any fan of retro, low-budget genre cinema."

Kevin G. (5/5)

Quirky Amicus

"The Terrornauts is an offbeat slice of British sci-fi that mixes cosmic curiosity with a distinctly quirky sense of humor. Produced by Amicus Productions, the film follows a group of scientists who build a device meant to communicate with extraterrestrial life, only to receive an unexpected response that pulls them into a bizarre interstellar encounter. Rather than focusing on spectacle, it leans into eccentric characters, surreal set design, and a playful tone, giving it a charming, almost psychedelic feel that sets it apart from more serious science fiction of its era. The Vinegar Syndrome Labs Blu-ray release treats the film as a rediscovered oddity, presenting it with a solid restoration that brings out its colorful, low-budget creativity. The transfer highlights the unusual production design and retro effects, while the curated extras help place the film within the context of 1960s British genre cinema and the output of Amicus. As part of the Vinegar Syndrome Labs line, the release celebrates the film’s uniqueness, making it an appealing pickup for collectors who enjoy strange, overlooked sci-fi curiosities."

Sci-Fi Sleaze

"If you're into 50's and 60's sci-fi sleaze, this will scratch your nasty itch."

Chris W. (3/5)

60s sci-fi

"This is one of the best looking Blu-ray discs I have seen."

Bjarte A. (5/5)

Entertaining Lat-Night Science Fiction

"This is a quality presentation of a cheesy 1960's science fiction film; perfect for late-night viewing. The characters are earnest and do their best to sell the story. The extras are solid and enjoyable."

Rick M. (5/5)

Golden age British SciFi

"Never enough British Sci Fi"

Henry S. (5/5)

Picasso Monster!

"Budget Don Knotts, a nonplussed cockney maid and a robot shaped like a virus all battle mind control aliens and apparently green spear wielding knife sacrificing aliens who've been controlled by those other aliens with mind control stuffs? Picasso Monster! Things blow up, then they're arrested by the French. The End."

Steven G. (5/5)

Don't read the source novel until after

"As a bit of kid-friendly science fiction adventure, Terrornauts is fine. As actual science-fiction, well. . . If you read Murray Leinster's "The Wailing Asteroid", as I did back in high school, the movie is a definite step down, a number of high ideas let down by shonky special effects and questionable plot points. Then, I'm not a kid buzzed on sugar in a theatre full of similarly stimulated kids who want the space stuff and sub-Doctor Who monsters."

Randall W. (2/5)

OK 60s sci fi

"1960's sci fi is one of my favorite genres. This one is a fun watch, but admittedly pretty lackluster in comparison to some other 60's offerings. Still, I'm happy to own this film and recommend if you're into these types of movies."
