The Cashen family has just relocated from the city to a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Upon arrival at their new home, Willy, their young son, explores the area, befriending a Native American shaman who warns him of the powerful forces and apparent curse on their land. Meanwhile, at home, Willy senses that there's something unusual about the cellar of their home; specifically that something strange might be living down there...and unfortunately for the Cashens, it's very hungry...

An unfortunately troubled production, with director Kevin Tenney (Night of the Demons, Witchtrap) called in early on to take over directing duties, THE CELLAR is a stylish monster film playing into the folk horror of the American southwest. Starring Patrick Kilpatrick (Minority Report), Academy Award nominee, Chris Miller (Puss In Boots), Suzanne Savoy (The Upside), and veteran character actor Don Collier (Tombstone), Vinegar Syndrome presents THE CELLAR newly restored in 2K and on Blu-ray for the first time, offered in both its commonly seen theatrical cut as well as its never before seen, and vastly superior, original director's cut.

Cool '80s monster movie in 2 versions

"A film I had never heard of before yet I knew the director's other work. This is a slight notch below stuff like Witchboard and Night Of The Demons (and especially the diamond-in-the-rough Witchtrap), but it's always fun to see Patrick Killpatrick shine on. I've always thought of the recent era of physical media as the perfect way to 'salvage' cut-to-ribbons films from yesteryear and while I can think of other titles that deserve it more, it's nice here to get the theatrical cut (which is a bit of a mess but looks great) and Tenney's original vision (slightly less great shape)."

Better than what I expected!

"I can say that I'm a fan of Kevin Tenney. I love Night of the Demons and Witchboard. The Cellar is a great addition to his filmography despite the slightly troubled production. Great mood and, great characters great setting! This release from our friends at Vinegar Syndrome boasts a great transfert and awesome extras. The two versions of the film (the theatrical cut and the director’s cut) is a really great addition. A must have!"

Director's Cut is great

"What a revelation the director's cut is! I blind bought this in the sale. . . and both my wife and I quite enjoyed it. It's a nice little monster flick for the family, with a bit of heart. The extras though were really interesting, and the Producers Cut is awful - and that's the version most have watched. Definitely worth a relook if you saw it on VHS and thought it sucked. Family friendly too"

Great release, average movie.

"I had seen this as a kid, vaguely remembered elements of it, but not the title. So, it took a while to uncover the title based only on a few half-remembered pieces of imagery. Finally picked it up for 1. the cover, 2. curiosity on how it would hold up to my vague nostalgic memory 3. Monster movie. It's really not terrible, but it's also not very interesting. . . falling a bit in the middling zone of not being great enough to celebrate, and not being bad enough to have laugh at. If the monster itself had been more unique, I think I'd consider this a hidden gem. Good interviews on the supplementals. Sounded like it had a very rocky start to the production."

The cellar

"This is your run of the mill monster in the basement film that has absolutely no surprises. Not that its a bad film but why do something that has been done so many times before and offer nothing that we haven't seen already? The film stars Patrick Kilpatrick who is bald in real life and you'll notice that he's wearing a hair piece. His character has anger issues and by the end of the film you have to think that his wife will have second thoughts about staying with him. He gets very violent at times. His son who has seen the monster is going to try and convince everyone of what he has seen and sets out to try and kill it himself. The film is hokey and predictable but even a bad monster in the basement flick is watchable. So is this one."
