Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.
When a wealthy widow sends a one thousand dollar bill to the local newspaper claiming murder, blackmail, a corrupt politician and $200,000 fortune to be had, it's up to reporter Terry Nichols and photographer Pidge 'Flash' Laurie to figure out the nefarious plot and clear the politician's (who's Terry's soon-to-be father-in-law) name. But they won't be alone. Among the colorful cast of characters are Terry's beautiful fiancee, a lawyer with his feline phobic secretary, a very deceiving private detective, and finally a mysterious woman and her even stranger black cat, which maybe involved with the murders itself!
From director Erle C. Kenton – whose classic shockers include HOUSE OF DRACULA, THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN and ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, comes the 1946 melodrama that marked the end of the Universal Pictures ‘Golden Age of Horror’: THE CAT CREEPS. Noah Beery Jr. (RED RIVER, THE ROCKFORD FILES), Lois Collier (COBRA WOMAN) and Paul Kelly (FEAR IN THE NIGHT) star in this supernatural thriller influenced by equal parts THE CAT AND THE CANARY, THE OLD DARK HOUSE and the wildly popular ‘mystery plays’ of the 1940’s, now scanned and restored in 2K by Vinegar Syndrome Labs from its 35mm dupe negative.

Great 1940’s horror / thriller
"This is another surprise and great release from Vinegar Syndrome. A Universal films thriller, from the 1940’s with great audio / video remastering, and still having the slip cover (using great 40’s art !) A pleasing addition to the horror / thriller collection !"

My skin is intact
"A twisty, turns fast talking murder mystery that gets you in and out in less than an hour. It's not my favorite thing, but it isn't bad. There's just something missing. I like Pidge and Nichols, they provide most of the comedy and have some of the better performances. Not too shabby all together, just missing some substance."

Unlikely but great VS release
"Vinegar Syndrome’s Cat Creeps is pure pre-Code weirdness—fog, shadows, and that strange early-sound stiffness that feels almost avant-garde. The restoration glows. It’s less a horror classic than a haunted relic, beautifully resurrected."

The Cat Creeps
"I like a lot of different aspects of a lot of different types of film and some of these aspects conflict with one another. I love long epic films, and I love shorter films. This film is the perfect length at 58 minutes and it's a mystery film. I love both of those things and its perfect for The Cat Creeps. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, gets in and out. Having said that, none of the characters here are all that memorable, but the vibes are what we are here for. I can't recommend buying it, but I do recommend giving it a watch."

Classic 40s Horror
"Fans of classic Universal horror will want to add this to their collection and let VS know there's a market for classic golden age horror with this release that was a pleasant surprise for their catalog. There are two art choices on te slipcover which are beautiful and of the period (1940s). There's even a commentary track and a featurette by Kim Newman!"
— Sam N. (5/5)
The Cat Creeps
"I like a good mystery and this one has the bonus of being a spooky mystery. The story is intriguing and the actors and characters are very good in particular. The setting, tone, and cinematography are the stand outs of this movie. There are so many scenes where shadows are used and it just adds to the creepy, mysterious nature of the movie. I really loved the dynamic between our hero and his friend. There's a natural banter to them that I found believable and ahead of its time in that it felt modern. The cover art is great on the slipcover and comes with a couple special features. This is a great watch during the Halloween season!"

Short, but sweet!
"A shorter feature, with not many extras. I love black and white films, so had to add this to my collection! :)"
— Elle N. (5/5)
Black cat
"It’s a fun time for fans of 1940s movies"
— Gustavo M. (5/5)
Awesome
"Love when VS releases an older film like this"
— Charles W. (5/5)
Okay release of an okay movie.
"I’m glad that VS is giving us these classic films on Blu-Ray, but this disc is lacking. It looks great, but the movie is less than an hour long and the only special features are a commentary and a featurette. The artwork is nice but they could’ve included more, a booklet or even the original The Cat and the Canary, which is public domain and would’ve cost nothing to include, would’ve made it a more valuable package. Still worth checking out for fans of the classics, but wait for a sale."
