Russia. 1992. The Soviet Union has fallen but there remains an unholy alliance between the mob and the KGB. Oleg, an Afghan war veteran, is running a survivalist summer camp when his son is taken hostage as retribution for his friend's refusal to lead a drug and gun smuggling caravan. With no other options to save his son, Oleg agrees to lead the caravan himself and is soon pitted against a siege of violence as he attempts to carry out his orders and live to see his son again.

Despite its early 90's production, Vsevolod Plotkin's RED MOB (Chtoby vyzhit) is staunchly situated in the stylistic tropes of late 80s action blockbusters. Helicopter dogfights, incredibly staged explosions, and death-defying action sequences abound, played against a tense and suspenseful story of survival.

Barely given a release outside of Russia, RED MOB played an important role in post-USSR Russian cinema, with much of its cast and crew continuing on to create the highly-successful NIGHT WATCH duology. Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents RED MOB on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world, newly restored from its 35mm Interpositive in both its Russian and slightly extended American version.

Mediocre Russian Action Movie

"Movie: Red Mob (1992) You watched Red Mob1992 (American version) Overall a pretty uneven movie. I found myself most interested in the stuff the villains were doing, trading weapons for drugs internationally in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, it's not fleshed out enough. It wasn't even clear exactly _where_ the movie was taking place; either the movie doesn't tell you or I missed it (although I'd still say that's partially the movie's fault). The heroes are mostly _fine_. The two main guys are Soviet-Afghan War vets, but this is another thread that I don't think was explored enough. One of them is possibly even Muslim (?), which surprised me b/c it seemed like he and the other guy were both ethnically Russian. Possibly there's some cultural nuance there that I'd be interested in understanding better, but I don't think this movie will help much. There's also the son of one of the main guys, and there's a decent amount of setup for character relationships in the beginning, but then ultimately I didn't find the resolution very satisfying. Lastly, there _is_ some good action in the movie, although it's not always deployed in a satisfying way, which overall makes it kind of meh. As an example, there's a big fight at the end involving two helicopters. While it's certainly impressive that the movie has access to multiple helicopters (including more that get exploded earlier), the confrontation just goes on for _way_ too long, to the point where it gets boring. This movie was basically 2 hours long. It either needed to use that runtime to go deeper into the unique geopolitical moment in which it was set, OR it needed to trim down the fat and be a leaner, 90 minute action movie. (Russian language version) Still overall underwhelming. I understood the plot _slightly_ better this time, but there were definitely some scenes with the villain that seemed like they didn't really fit into the rest of the timeline of the movie. Even his facial hair changes at one point and it adds to the confusion. There's definitely no confirmation on where exactly this is supposed to be taking place. The Caucasus mountains, sure, but then where is the caravan going? The action also really drags. There's a part where one of the heroes is driving a truck around for no real reason, then later there's _way_ too many explosions in a factory where you never get a clear sense of the layout, and finally there's the ending helicopter fight which is interminable. This is probably the better version to watch, but I wouldn't recommend it as intrinsically worth watching. To make it worth it I think you have to be somewhat interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff. Extras: Weird to have the Russian version as an extra instead of being as easy to watch as the English version IMO. The background info on the producer was interesting enough. Packaging: Bonus points for reversible cover. The new slipcover is also pretty cool."

Russian fun!

"The plot is weak and first hour is a little slow, but the action sequences, explosions and helicopter dog chase makes it worth it. Great art on the slip too!"

Ruthless Streets

"Red Mob is a lean, hard-edged crime picture that thrives on grit and attitude rather than polish, dropping you into a world where loyalty is fragile and violence is currency. The film’s rough textures and blunt storytelling give it an immediacy that feels lived-in, as if every back alley and smoky room has its own history. Performances carry a raw intensity that suits the material, even when the narrative turns familiar, because the mood stays tense and unvarnished throughout. It may not reinvent the genre, but it delivers the kind of street-level toughness that keeps it engaging, a tough little slice of crime cinema that knows exactly what it wants to be."

Ted Mob

"Excellent film. Highly recommended!"

Justin M. (5/5)

Red Mob

"Nonsensical plotting, unlikeable characters, questionable editing and terrible dubbing. Thank god for the explosions and the helicopter stunts. Just sit back, have a beer (preferrably every time something explodes) and relax enjoy the ride"
