Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.
When reports of a clawed beast cause hundreds of natives to flee their Brazilian plantation jobs, the landowners send a macho trouble-shooter aptly named Rock Dean and cancer-researching doctor Andrea Romar deep into the rainforest for a steamy odyssey of dance numbers, headhunters, blowguns, grope-happy savages and one of the most infamous monsters in horror history!
From famed writer/director Curt Siodmak – scribe of THE WOLF MAN, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE and DONOVAN’S BRAIN – comes perhaps the most notorious jungle shocker of the 50s: CURUCU, BEAST OF THE AMAZON! Starring 50s B-movie legend John Bromfield (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE), cult movie icon, Beverly Garland (IT CONQUERED THE WORLD), alongside Tom Payne (LOVE SLAVES OF THE AMAZON), Vinegar Syndrome Labs offers this criminally overlooked studio produced shocker on Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored in 2K from its completely uncensored 35mm dupe negative.

Curucu the Bizarre
"“Curicu: Beast of the Amazon” is without a doubt an artifact of its time. Following the trend of 1950s creature/monster features, “Curucu” shows a fantastic scenery thanks to it being filmed in Brazil, beautiful colors and a monster that could be the Blood Freak’s long lost cousin from the jungle. This Edition come with a beautiful slipcase and extras including interviews and an audio commentary among others"

The restoration is gorgeous
"A movie that struggles to fill its 75 minute runtime. Some nice on location shots in Brazil can’t really save it. Hurt by revealing its Scooby Doo twist too early, leading to a last act that just sort of goes and goes without much steam. Peaks early during the doctor’s office pickup scene. For Universal completists."

Curious, Beast of the Amazon
"Had been wanting to see this movie for a long time, so took the plunge. Wasn't sure what to expect but love Jim Davis,as he's an excellent actor. All in all a pretty good movie, and happy to have it in my collection."
— Kathy L. (5/5)
You know what to expect
"You know what you're getting with a title like this. Siodmak is a better writer than the material deserves, though, so it's a big step above similar exotic monster movies. It also looks great, with the on-location cinematography really popping in this transfer. The special features are surprisingly good, especially the interviews, and the art is cool but unimaginative (the slipcover is the same as the case's cover). There's no booklet though, which absolutely sucks."

Cool 50s monster movie
"Cool 50s monster movie. If these budget monster movies from the 50s are your thing you are going to like this one. The slipcover art is also great."

Creature Feature
"A pretty fun movie that delivers a little more than you would expect. Worth picking up on sale if you're at least curious about fifties films."
— Charles W. (5/5)
Fun and campy 50s jungle adventure
"Curucu is a brisk 75 minute 1950s escapade of lushly colorful Amazon photography, spliced with some (tame) mondo style stock footage, held together by a schmaltzy yet charming budding romance between the two headstrong leads. It's cheesy, with some clumsily cut together editing and woefully dated effects, including the "monster", but this is all part of the endearing allure of these sorts of films. Don't go in expecting a traditional 50s "monster" movie, as the kills are very sparse and this is really an adventure travelogue type of film. Think, lots of chases by wild Amazonian tribal people a la Jungle Holocaust, but without the sleaze or explicit aspects. The leads are likeable, the lead actress is classically attractive and of her era, and there's some solid melodic recurring bits of score. Well recommended."
