Saint Simon, a deranged and manic painter, believes that he is the reincarnation of Vincent van Gogh. When his beautiful wife dies unexpectedly, Simon suffers an emotional breakdown and insists that his necrophiliac butler, Hermann, help remove her corpse from the cemetery and bring it back to his castle to help him retain his creativity; placing the body on display inside of a hidden crypt. Still struggling with his art, Simon soon meets a young woman named Sybille, who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife, and lures her back to the castle with the intention of making her into his new muse. Trapped inside, Sybille must find a way to escape the horrors taking place within the castle walls, as Simon has recently discovered that human blood may hold the key to unlocking his true creative potential.

"The slipcase, packaging, and transfer on Blood Delirium look great. The movie itself is a trip, but thankfully it doesn't let plot get in the way of a good time. Not the most coherent story, but it's certainly entertaining. The bonus interviews with the actors and assistant director were interesting, and helped shed some light on what the hell Bergonzelli was thinking"
"Bergonzelli's late 80s remake of Color Me Blood Red is a tasteless trash fest and in this case that means maximum entertainment. Kind hard to believe this was straight to video as it seems like something released earlier in the decade during the prime years. Bergonzelli also directed the bananas In The Folds Of The Flesh, so you know you're in for a good time. Really nice looking transfer plus some good extras (interviews, commentary) make this a no-brainer."
"This is prime VS material! When people talk about essential Vinegar Syndrome releases, I rarely ever hear people mention BLOOD DELIRIUM. It has all of the trademarks of a great cult film, presented in a restoration that this film probably doesn't deserve. Great stuff overall!"

"If your not into horror with absurdist plots and way over-the-top hammy acting, I don't recommend it. However, I found its camp, whether intentional or not, to be amusing in a novel way, though I certainly wouldn't call this an effective horror film. For a film with this level of debauchery, the overall tone actually isn't that dark, partially due to the performances, and also from the way it's structured, and much of the violence being more implied. John Phillip Law delivers a completely ludicrous performance as the painter everyone in the film laughingly refers to as the "maestro". He maintains this wide-eyed madman expression the entire film, and it really is quite funny, you can't take it seriously. Then there's his lascivious butler Hermann, whose the actual murderer of the film. The mad painter/artist theme of this reminded me of Bucket Of Blood, and Driller Killer. Though there really isn't explicit gore effects, the film does include necrophilia and brief cannibalism. The editing of the film really jumps around jarringly, with successive scenes jumping way ahead in time and skipping over visually showing various bits, such as when the blonde woman is being attacked by a dog, and seconds later she's strung upside down, naked and dead, and being bloodletted for blood paint. It's pretty disorienting and this happens throughout the film. The closing slow motion sequences where Law is flailing about, clearly pulling pillars, furniture, and other objects onto himself as he falls, and what's clearly a piece of foam made to resemble castle rock Hermann has fall on him, is particularly farcical and comedic. This is a film about reincarnation and doppelgangers, sort of. . . with Law's wife dying and the identical Sybille coming into his life shortly after. Another unbelievable aspect of this circus is how quickly Sybille agrees to live at the castle, and goes along with all their inappropriate and nonsense behavior, until she starts seeing dead bodies. Blood Delirium doesn't really make sense, and I believe it's unintentionally hilarious at numerous points, but it is a unique late 80s Italian mess of a film, that I found enjoyable enough. There are far better, but also far worse Italian horrors from the close of the 80s. You could compare it to the French Devil Story in the VS catalog. If you like Devil Story, you'll probably like this."
