A bracingly bleak neo-noir soaked in sinister atmosphere, Na’s feature debut focuses on Dong Zi (Li Jiuxiao), a 21-year-old debt collector making a dishonest living in the bustling criminal economy in the Sichuan Province city of Zhenwu, all while aspiring to a better life than that which his ailing, ex-gangster father (an excellent Qi Zhi) has lived. Boasting a crack ensemble cast, brooding nocturnal cinematography courtesy of DP Li Jianeng, and an insider’s understanding of small-town claustrophobia, Na’s sleek neo-noir established him as one of Mainland China’s undeniable emerging talents during its lauded festival run.

Streetwise, a limited edition slipcover by Tony Stella, is praised for its fantastic visual representation on Blu-ray, wonderful transfer, and great release. It is a cool minimalist film that leans more towards familial drama than crime-driven noir.

"A powerful look at life on the margins with a style that feels completely authentic."
"I picked this up having loved films like The Wild Goose Lake and Black Coal, Thin ice and it was another good bit of mainland neo-noir. The disc is a little bare bones though with an interview, trailer and a booklet. If you are on the hunt for more crime or noir films from mainland China, this one is worth looking at."
"Gritty, stylish Japanese gangster cinema"
"Streetwise is a moody, atmospheric neo‑noir that follows Dongzi, a young man stuck in a fading Sichuan river town, who becomes a henchman for a local debt collector to pay for his father’s medical care. The film blends gritty realism with a woozy, neon‑lit style, creating a portrait of small‑town life shaped by poverty, obligation, and impossible choices. Director Na Jiazuo brings a patient, observational touch, letting the story unfold through quiet moments, tense confrontations, and the emotional weight carried by its characters. Li Jiuxiao’s performance as Dongzi is understated but affecting, capturing a young man pulled between duty, longing, and the crushing limitations of his environment"
