From arthouse to Canuxploitation, Canadian International Pictures (CIP) is devoted to resurrecting vital, distinctive, and overlooked triumphs of Canadian cinema. This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing CIP's brand new line of home video releases!
They called it progress.
He called it murder.
While visiting a Montreal hospital, investigative reporter Jason Brady (Lady in White’s Len Cariou) meets concerned citizen Marion Galbraith (The Fly’s Carol Lazare), who reveals that local children are being poisoned by a nearby factory. When the victims begin dying, Brady recognizes the urgency of this story, but he encounters resistance and danger at every turn. As his obsession grows, so does his relationship with Marion, causing a rift in his marriage to Alicia (Goin' Down the Road’s Jayne Eastwood), right as a series of powerful, unscrupulous forces promise violent retaliation – on Brady, his wife, and their children.
A year before directing the harrowing drug drama Drying Up the Streets, Robin Spry concluded his impressive run at the National Film Board of Canada with One Man, an unlikely fusion of prestige issue movie, conspiracy thriller, and Canuxploitation crime saga – that won an impressive seven Canadian Film Awards. Playing like a lost TV movie classic from the ’70s, this riff on the films of Sidney Lumet and Alan J. Pakula boasts an all-star Canadian supporting cast, including Miguel Fernandes (East End Hustle), Terry Haig (The Pyx), Jean Lapointe (Orders), Marc Legault (The Mob), Barry Morse (The Changeling), August Schellenberg (Cross Country), Sean Sullivan (The Hard Part Begins), and cult filmmaker Larry Kent (The Bitter Ash). Simultaneously witty and unsettling, this is a Canadian film like no other.

"CIP nails it again"
"Excellent movie. Len Cariou is terrific as a reporter obsessed with a story, and Jayne Eastwood is brilliant as his wife. Tough subject matter but a great film from documentarian Robin Spry."
"A crime drama, marriage soap suds, suffering children, villainous capitalists, news program urgencies, it's all in here - and exceptionally well-done. Highly watchable and engaging, with various sympathies sure to rise up while watching. The 1977 setting proves to be timeless, the callousness of the capitalist money men and the violence of elements both criminal and corporate, plus a marriage in peril by refusal to reveal sources, it's all presented in well-acted well-written characters. The 90-minutes plus of short films on the disc as bonus material is beyond fantastic."
"Had never seen this. Great release. Slip is grand"
"A powerful Canadian drama that blends journalism, ethics, and environmental activism into a taut thriller. Jan Rubes and Len Cariou give weight to a story that feels both urgent and grounded. Impressive restoration of a film long overdue for rediscovery."
"Another great CIP release loaded with extras. Also loved the TRAFFICOPTER short with beautiful shots of 70s Montreal from a helicopter."
"Very interesting film about a journalist fighting over a hard case of a story."
"Solid 1970’s Canadian movie. I have yet to hit a dud in my many CIP purchases. This one was no exception, very enjoyable movie. Interesting extras only added to the value of this release."
"A solid thriller about some very important topics about the media. A movie I never would have heard of without CIP."
"This is a tense, thought provoking, political thriller along the lines of All The President's Men or The Parallax View. Not quite as epic or complete as those two movies, but in a similar vain and at a much smaller budget. It has an interesting perspective being a Canadian based film. The lead actor, Len Cariou carries the plot line well, he's intense and conflicted, and strong supporting characters add to the depth of the story. Well directed and a recommended pick up for anyone interested in the journalist/political/corporate corruption type genre. This release is packed with special features including many short films by the director, Robin Spry. The short films span various subjects from motorcycle racing, traffic reporting, mining, and abortion. All really interesting and a cool bonus."
