After surviving two harrowing nautical disasters, Lieutenant Claude de Ross washes up on a remote, uncharted tropical island along with a gaggle of similarly stranded escaped convicts. Soon, the cursed castaways are attacked by amphibious monsters, the work of Professor Ernest Marvin, a disgraced American biologist who has tampered with genetics to create an army of "fishmen". Professor Marvin controls the creatures and has been using them to plunder a submerged city of gold that he believes to be the lost city of Atlantis. But the natives are restless and the fishmen are slowly, surely beginning to hatch their own plans.
Starring legendary actors Joseph Cotten (CITIZEN KANE, LADY FRANKENSTEIN), Richard Johnson (ZOMBIE, THE HAUNTING) and comely "Bond girl" Barbara Bach (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN was originally released twice to American theaters in the early '80s via Roger Corman's New World pictures in a radically altered version called SCREAMERS (aka SOMETHING WAITS IN THE DARK). "Finally a special edition to do Fishmen justice. Sergio Martino's gill-man classic has a long interview with the man himself and a commentary as extras. If you've seen this one you know how fun it is. If it's a blind buy, I doubt it'll be disappointing to those out for a gonzo Martino flick!"
"This is broadly a take on Island of Lost Souls and all those movies (taken from books of course). Sergio Martino must've tried his hand at most genres, but this isn't really his best effort. The fishmen are done no favours with the sharper picture quality, appearing to be very obviously guys in rubber suits. Not that this is the only problem with the film, but with that said the movie does have a certain sort of charm. Some hammy acting really rounds it off and makes this a fairly watchable, albeit silly movie. So I've given it 4 stars for effort and really just for being a product of the time. I've read there's a version with more gore which wasn't included, much to the annoyance of those more familiar with the film than myself. I can't say too much about that, but in any event it's worth a watch as far as I'm concerned."
"Island of the Fishmen feels like Sergio Martino raided a video store before it existed, grabbed Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Island of Dr. Moreau, a Lovecraft paperback, an Atlantis documentary, and a jungle adventure serial, then decided to mash them all together. Against all odds, it mostly works."
"An amiable mash-up of Verne and Lovecraft. Not as sleazy as a lot of Italian horror, but a lot of fun, and looks pretty good. Richard Johnson had a weird career! I saw him doing Chekhov for the Royal Shakespeare Society, but he's best known for tropical spaghetti horror."
"The original version of this classic is a much slower burn than the “Screamers” version. Still, I’m happy I was able to finally watch the original version. Excellent slipcover too!"
"Unlike the re-edited US version “Screamers”, which had a very gory prologue added, this Italian SF / monster thriller is more akin to an Amicus fantasy adventure a la “Land that Time Forgot” or “At the Earth’s Core. ” In fact, I half expected Doug McClure to turn up. So don’t anticipate any hard core horror; there’s little here that would bother a PG rating. That said, and acknowledging that it’s a bit of a mess, the film is a highly entertaining monster romp that throws in Lovecraftian gill men, the sunken continent of Atlantis, gold treasure looting, moustache-twirling villainy, Barbara Bach taking a bath, and voodoo. I still don’t know what voodoo had to do with anything else, but I digress. Crack a beer and enjoy!"
