Since 2004, Bleeding Skull has explored otherworldly cinema through reviews, books, and home video releases. We shine a light on independent genre films that have flown under the radar but deserve to be seen by all. Fangoria has called Bleeding Skull “The go-to encyclopedia for trash, bizarre, and shot-on-video cinema,” while Vice referred to it as “like a fever dream glimpse into parallel worlds". Two years before PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, there was IN MEMORIUM—a chilling found footage haunted house movie from filmmaker Amanda Gusack. The story follows Dennis (Erik McDowell) and his partner Lily (Johanna Watts) as they install home security cameras to document Dennis's struggles with a terminal disease. But soon, the cameras capture . . . something else. Never released on home video, IN MEMORIUM is a prescient exploration of generational trauma in the horror genre and an essential Analog Horror artifact.

Reviews
Solid
"This 2005 horror feature is a landmark piece of early found-footage and analog horror history. Predating Paranormal Activity by two years, it relies on static home surveillance cameras to create a deeply unsettling atmosphere. It handles its central themes of terminal illness and grief with a level of seriousness rarely seen in low-budget genre cinema."

A Sad and Scary Multi-Camera Found Footage Flick
"Takes the usual FF formula and amps it up with a multi-camera home security setup. Some creepy moments here, with the main character seeming to have to deal with some incredibly personal issues as he goes through the final stages of cancer. Not sure if it all works, but the extras on this release speak to the intent and are interesting to check out after the film."
— Andrew G. (3/5)
Interesting early found footage
"A neat little curio of found footage and SOV horror. While it doesn't have quite the feeling of realness of earlier found footage outings (McPherson Tape, Blair Witch Project, etc. ) or the big scares of the very similar Paranormal Activity just two years later, it has more thematic and emotional meat than either. While it feels a little more staged than I'd like, the performances are pretty good and it's a clever story. Worth a watch!"

Kept Me Invested!
"I remember asking Bleeding Skull which 3-4 releases I should start with to get a feel for the label. And while this found-footage flick was not among the suggestions, it honestly ended up being one of my favorites! (Black Mamba too, but that's for another discussion. ) I like that it doesn't go into "my partner's hallucinating" gaslighting territory; there's a shared common belief between the couple that unusual things are happening around the house. The colors are a muted throughout the film, but that was probably intentional and only added to the atmosphere. You really do root for the characters. It's a small intimate cast, maybe 3-4 people, so you get a good feel for who they are. I don't think any of the acting was bad; if anything, these actors were given some really heavy emotional material to work with. In Memorium is definitely one I'll be revisiting. In some aspects I think it's more memorable and effective than other found-footage flicks like Paranormal Activity."
— Bret L. (5/5)
Great concept hampered only by subpar acting
"This was a really entertaining film that I think gets reduced down to be simply a precursor to Paranormal Actvity, but it had a lot to say about grief, illness, and familial relations. The actors, especially the female lead, can venture into the melodramatic, but it is quite entertaining nonetheless."
