It begins with the crowd-pleasing spirit of a John Hughes movie and fades slowly into an off-kilter dystopia with the energy of Dazed and Confused.

"I struggle to even give this movie 3 stars. Sometimes a movie may not grab your attention if you’re in a certain frame of mind, so maybe I’ll give this a rewatch at some point. "Ham on Rye is a sweetly poignant film on the awkwardness and innocent of youth and what remains for those who are left behind when peers "grow up". The first half feels like a narrator-less episode of The Adventures of Pete and Pete, with all the weirdness and rituals of that show intact. In the second, our previously background characters move forward and the film makers show what is left for the kids who were unable or unwilling to pass the rituals their culture dictates. It's a worthwhile watch and with a dose of magical realism tells a lonely, lovely story about growing up."
