One of notorious Eurosleaze auteur Jess Franco and producer Erwin C. Dietrich's most shocking films,1976's Barbed Wire Dolls is the ultimate unholy “Women-in-Prison” exploitation opus. In it, Franco favorite and lifelong muse Lina Romay (Doriana Gray, Rolls Royce Baby) stars as the wide-eyed Maria, an unfortunate young woman who kills her father (played by Franco in a delirious flashback sequence) in self defense after he attempts to rape her. She is tried, sentenced and shipped off to what is perhaps the grisliest, greasiest and most depraved women’s penitentiary in screen history where, at the hands, fingers and fists of psychotic lesbian warden Monica Swinn (The Duke of Burgundy, Female Vampire), she and her fellow inmates are subjected to an endless onslaught of perverse psychological and sexual abuse.
Filled to the gills with sex, Sapphic erotica, copious amounts of female nudity and offensively staged scenes of genital humiliation, this sleazy Franco masterpiece will rattle your cage in the sweetest way...

"Barbed Wire Dolls is not only smut, it's a good movie. Probably one of the best of this kind of thing from Franco. Buy with confidence."
"Jess Franco made roughly two hundred films and the critical apparatus has never recovered. We are trained to locate the singular achievement, the crowning work, the one you hand to the skeptic. Franco offers no such thing. He offers instead a continuous condition — a body of work that must be entered rather than surveyed, and BARBED WIRE DOLLS is as good a door as any. The women-in-prison picture is among the most rigidly formulated genres ever devised, which is precisely why Franco's indifference to it is so revealing. He has no interest in the machinery of escape, the earned catharsis, the third-act uprising. He drifts. The zoom lens hunts across faces and bars and foliage with an impatience that has nothing to do with coverage and everything to do with a temperament. Scenes dissolve into reverie mid-scene. The plot is a pretext and Franco never pretends otherwise. Lina Romay does not give a performance in any sense the term usually implies. She submits to the film, entirely, and the result is closer to documentary than to acting. The material is genuinely ugly and the film does not soften it. This is Franco at his least ingratiating and his most characteristic. Approach accordingly, and gratefully."

"One of Franco's more accessible movies. As ever, I wish we had the German soundtrack, but still great to see it on Blu-ray."
"I am not the biggest Jess Franco fan but found this particular film to be enjoyable sleaze."
