A family's home movies document a desperate crime spree and a bid to outrun the consequences…Or do they? In this meta-fiction thriller, an average family’s youtube videos have been edited to resemble something quite different. An extraordinary feat of editing, a provocative parable of the pursuit of happiness, and a disturbing demonstration of the mutability of the stories we share in the Internet age, FRAUD defies simplistic definition.

Reviews
It’s a lie, honest!
"First off, the slipcover is one of my favorites to come out of Vinegar Syndrome. It makes the whole package just pop. This one is a documentary of sorts but that’s all I’ll say as I think the impact comes from watching it without prior knowledge. I knew this was divisive and now I get it. I wouldn’t disagree with someone who hates it. But I also love it. Either way, it’s a conversation starter."

Fascinating experiment unveils an even crazier “truth”
"I want to say a lot about Fraud, but I won’t. I will just encourage you to watch it and then immediately do research on the father in the movie. Just look at my photo. He immediately replied to my review on Letterboxd as he does to most reviews on there. The “truth” is just as compelling as the “fictional” film."

Great concept!
"A great concept that transformed mundane home movies into something much much darker. Beware if you have motion sickness, lots of frantic editing!"

Vinegar Syndrome’s blu ray release
"Vinegar Syndrome’s blu ray release of Fraud gives this unsettling collage documentary a strikingly clean and deliberate presentation, sharpening its commentary on media, identity, and the slippery nature of truth. The film’s construction—built from repurposed home video footage—has always carried a voyeuristic charge, and the upgraded release makes that charge feel even more immediate. This edition treats Fraud as a serious work of experimental nonfiction rather than a curiosity. Vinegar Syndrome packages the film with a thoughtful set of contextual materials that help frame its controversial reception and the ethical questions surrounding its assembly. The slipcover design leans into the film’s themes of surveillance and digital self‑presentation, giving the release a stark, modern look that suits the material. For collectors, it feels like a boutique presentation that understands the film’s uneasy tone. The supplemental features are essential. The commentary track digs into the editing process, the sourcing of footage, and the conceptual framework behind transforming everyday recordings into a narrative about compulsion and collapse. Interviews explore the film’s polarizing impact, touching on debates about authorship, manipulation, and the boundaries of documentary practice. Archival materials and production notes help illuminate how the project evolved from experiment to finished feature. Together, the extras make the release feel like a small seminar on the ethics and artistry of found footage cinema. The film itself becomes an exercise in interpretation. Watching Fraud is less about following a plot and more about confronting how easily images can be shaped into meaning. The blu ray’s clarity enhances this effect, making every cut, juxtaposition, and repeated motif feel intentional. The viewer is pushed to question what they are seeing, how it has been arranged, and what responsibility lies in the act of looking. It is a challenging experience, but the improved presentation makes that challenge more rewarding. Vinegar Syndrome’s release elevates Fraud into a fully realized artifact of modern experimental filmmaking. The restoration is crisp, the features are substantial, and the film’s conceptual exercise gains new weight through the upgraded presentation."

"Loved it! Great slip cover"
— Jaxon S. (5/5)
An incredible example of the power of editing.
"It’s amazing the story that these filmmakers could tell with found footage. Documentary as a whole is deeply misunderstood, and this film is one of the best examples of that."
— Joshua L. (5/5)

"Memory continues to put out exceptional release with their catalog. Although this film didnt exactly grip me the way their other narrative features did, I still enjoyed the ride."
