    Reviews

Trippy, Tense and well-paced INTL noir

"Instantly hooked by the music and trippy visuals. The pacing keeps the energy up throughout, while the soundtrack ranges from obscure score to local Japanese gems and ’60s sounds—often counterplaying unfortunate scenes with upbeat music. A solid title with a beautiful slipcover, if you can get it."

    Kyle M. (4/5)

    A Gosha Gem

"Stands out in the noir genre, offering elegance and atmosphere more akin to French than American noirs. The story is fairly predictable, but it still delivers more than you’d expect, especially through Nakadai’s powerful performance as the nihilistic lead. You can spot a Gosha film pretty quickly even when not doing a Samurai flick—his visuals and the raw, animalistic behavior of his characters make it clear."

    Kevin L. (5/5)

    Great movie and transfer

"Really enjoyed the photography and look of the film as a new wave Japanese Noir. The extra features were decent and the release had great packaging and recommend getting with the slip cover. The transfer by film movement was really well done. Be advised that this is a Japanese language movie with English subtitles."

    James S. (5/5)

    Good Action

"The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

    Paul K. (5/5)

    “Five Head of Gentlemen” (五匹の紳士)

"A solidly entertaining mixture of crime drama and detective-sort of story (albeit for the protagonist’s own peace of mind of what he’s gotten involved in, with the answers being both reluctant and twisting), both from the perspective of a would-be killer with a conscience. Seeing Oida find, perhaps not something to keep living his ruined life for long-term, but people he wants to protect and a way to try to make amends for his past mistakes, makes for a tale that is overall bleak and violent, but not without heart as well as hope for the innocent."

    Benjamin C. (5/5)

    60's cool

"Atmospheric Japanese noir, with a cool jazzy soundtrack"

    Arthur C. (5/5)

    Japanese Crime Noir

"Cool Japanese crime noir flick from the 60's. Cool stylized look in black and white. Cool slipcover art as well. A fine Hideo Gosha film."

    Adam R. (4/5)

"Man, I have to say that Hideo Gosha is now one of my favorite japanese directors. What a beautiful and endearing film. Get one copy for you!!!"

    GILBERTO (5/5)

    More classic Hideo Gosha!

"So glad that this directors films are currently recieving the love care and attention they so richly deserve, hopefully there are more to come, his entire filmography needs releasing on blu ray."

    Harry F. (5/5)

    Cool Japanese noir flick

"Cool Japanese noir flick with a snazzy jazz score and a plot that has a decent amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Tatsuya Nakadai shows once again why he was one of the best to ever do it, never seen the dude sleepwalk through a role."
