During a casual run in the forest, student athlete Renee (The Dead Zone’s Roberta Weiss) is unceremoniously interrupted by deranged mountain man Vern (Rolling Vengeance’s Lawrence King-Phillips), who ties a rope around her neck, drags her through the woods, and brings her to an isolated cabin. As helicopters search the area, Vern torments Renee with a series of terrifying and humiliating violations, but a glimmer of hope appears when his father Joe (Elves star Dan Haggerty) arrives on the scene and pledges to set her free. But Vern is incensed by this attack on his “property,” and he will stop at nothing to maintain his oppressive grip on Renee.

Written and directed by Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker co-writer Boon Collins and loosely inspired by a shocking true story, this USA Up All Night favorite takes a harrowing journey from psychosexual horror to high stakes adventure yarn with the introduction of Grizzly Adams himself Dan Haggerty. Intensely outré from beginning to end, this little-seen mindbender – shot by Robert McLachlan (Final Destination) and scored by Michel Rubini (Manhunter) – needs to be seen to be believed.

"It's the 1980s, a movie about a woman kidnapped by a madman might make you think that certain things might happen to the woman in the film. But this Canadian picture subverts your expectations in several ways, and the story is actually all the better for it. Dan Haggerty does play a tough mountain man, but his character actually has a small arc and a surprise relation to the main story that I didn't expect, and the movie was a richer experience for it. Great scenery, though some of it stock footage. Come for the 1980's woman in peril and stay for a complex psychological drama."

A breakneck survival thriller that's never looked better

"CIP is rapidly becoming one of my favorite sub-labels. I've always been a casual fan of Canuxploitation but was mostly unfamiliar with the indie film scene it sprang from. Abducted might be my favorite of this favorite. This is a survivor thriller that doesn't play around, despite the comforting presence of Grizzly Adams. The slip design is immaculate, the transfer is beautiful, and the extras are voluminous. Recommended."

Tedious, frustrating, and uneventful backwoods kidnapping

"This is based on an actual kidnapping in Montana and another adaptation of these events was released a year after this. The 2k scan of the "35mm blow up internegative" doesn't look good to me. This is one of the most grain-heavy blu ray transfers of an 80s film you'll ever see. I wasn't impressed by the quality at all. The whole kidnapper/victim dynamic in this is off, and ineffective. Vern in reality never actually does all that much to Rene, and Rene is at times either way too courteous (thanking him for a bit of food) or unsatisfyingly passive with her situation. The Vern character is actually more annoying than he ever is menacing. She never once aggressively fights back, but rather meekly resumes being a captive after a couple half-hearted escape efforts. But Vern also does very little beyond some groping, mounting her while clothed then crying, and hitting her with a belt a few times. My main point here is the entire situation is seriously lacking in actual peril, and the film is basically devoid of any explicit violence or abuse. This is a very tame kidnapping film. Dan Haggerty, perhaps best known as Grizzly Adams and his lead role in Elves, shows up later on as Vern's father Joe. He's presented as noble but is unbelievably foolish and naive, as Vern repeatedly tries to force himself upon Rene, while Joe reassures her that he's going to protect her and lead her home. It's very apparent Vern is crazed and isn't going to idly stand by while Joe takes Rene away from him, so Joe is frustratingly imprudent the whole film. I think a lot of viewers will find this dull, as the final events play out in predictable fashion. If your looking for some thrilling, actually harrowing kidnapping and captivity story, this definitely isn't it."
