Art Label is the new outlet for envelope-pushing arthouse and experimental cinema. Growing from previous work under the Verboden Video and Culture Shock Releasing banners, Art Label is focusing on films that challenge traditional rules of form and content. Art Label is broadening its roots in horror and exploitation, reaching into other dimensions of expression to give new kicks to a well-versed audience of cinematic thrill seekers. Even the most hardened moviegoers will find stimulation in Art Label's releases.

The citizens of The Pink Forest stare into iridescent cubes and cannot look away. Apple, Bird, and Violet manage to break their trance. They experience the sensuality of fruit and each other in The Forest, but soon realize it is not enough. The Special People embark on a journey to bring the other citizens of The Forest back to consciousness by destroying the master cube, guarded by the formidable Overlords. Along the way, Apple gets separated from Bird and Violent, and must continue the journey alone. She encounters many obstacles, and learns that if she is to free the citizens of The Forest, she may have to sacrifice her own life.

Mostly recorded in a single room in Brooklyn, The Special People is the culmination of 15 years of creating video art that ranges from delightfully playful to daringly vulerable. Director Erica Schreiner built a sparkling, fantastical melange of sets and backdrops to create a stunningly rich world populated with wonderfully strange characters. The soft, ethereal visuals are underscored by an original score from co-star Johnny Dydo of the garage-tropicalia band The Johns.

      A true experimental piece

"As an Art Label release, this is definitely for a specific audience. The film functions more like a surreal metaphor rather than a traditional narrative, following some truly bizarre characters through an abstract world. If you appreciate D. I. Y. art house stuff, the technical presentation on this disc is totally solid."

"Freedom will not be given it has to be won. Art Label once again presents an interesting work of art."

      preachy and pretentious

"let me start by saying that i love art films. this is not an art film. there is nothing poetic or abstract here. the premise is a very thin and heavy handed "metaphor" for phone addiction that feels like a bad YA dystopian fiction novel. the plot is just the main character encountering characters that are obvious metaphors for an opinion the director disagrees with, and the dialogue reads like a reddit comment argument that goes on way too long. and yes i said reads, as the dialogue isn't spoken, but just appears on screen with subtitles as the characters lazily mime their lines, which makes for incredibly awkward acting. there is no nuance, every scene beats you over the head with it's message for several minutes longer than it needs to. the main character is always right about everything and just runs into strawman after strawman and her beliefs are never once challenged in any meaningful way. she never reconsiders anything or grows or learns, she's just right about everything from the start and everyone else is wrong. she then meets someone who tells her that yes, she is in fact right about everything and that makes her a "special person". she then singlehandedly saves the day and the credits roll revealing that the mary sue main character was a self-insert played by the director of this ego-stroking vanity project. i don't even disagree with most of the messaging, it's just delivered in the most arrogant possible way. it's not even merciful enough to be brief at an agonizing two hours. worst movie i've ever seen, and i really do mean that."

      Special

"A neat art project film. Art Label is always putting out some really interesting and unique outsider stuff, always something that pushes the boundaries of independent and low budget cinema than other specialty labels outputs. This one is no different."
