Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

When college coed Saruul takes a temporary job as a clerk in an adult store, her poker-faced indifference makes her the perfect foil for the clientele, who range from slightly sheepish and cautiously curious to downright perverse. But it is Katya, the shop's flamboyant, eccentric female owner who initiates Saruul’s journey into adulthood – taking her under her wing, teaching her the art of living, and gently guiding her on the path to self-discovery.

This joyfully quirky, "candid big-city coming-of-age story” (Variety) from Sengedorj Janchivdorj, "one of the best voices of contemporary cinema in Mongolia” (Asian Movie Pulse), is fueled by a splendidly original script, utterly unique characters and unexpected encounters.

"A film about self-discovery, and all the drama that comes with it. Great release for a solid film. Bonus features + cover art create a perfect in-road to a film many probably haven't seen. Feels like a fresh take on the MPDG genre."

Good coming-of-age movie

"It's a coming-of-age movie about a young woman who steps out of her comfort zone when she takes a job in a sex shop. This new experience leads her to discover herself and question her way of life. Initially very stoic, she gradually flourishes and opens up to others to finally allows a sensitivity she had previously kept hidden inside to express itself. The film uses various means to reveal this hidden sensitivity, including a few magnificent, surreal musical scenes, but far too few in my opinion. The film truly shines during these scenes and would have benefited from fully exploring this direction. Especially since, apart from these few moments, the film uses virtually no music. Because the main character strives for stoicism, this often results in scenes that lack a certain warmth to truly immerse us in the intended emotion. The main character delivers a good performance and still possesses enough charisma to keep us interested. The visuals shots are also often stunning, but a greater use of music would have elevated the film to a higher level. In my view, it would have transformed something very good into something that would resonate deeply within us."

Discovering new cinema

"This was the first Mongolian film I had ever seen, and it made me want to see more. This is a coming-of-age film about a young woman and her new boss, and has some cool stylistic flourishes and great performances."

"A coming-of-age story between a college student and the woman who mentors her. I refer you to Francis V. 's review. They describe the scenario much better than I could. One note: the subtitles do not disappear until the next person speaks. They just stay on the screen. That's not right."

Small jewel of a movie

"Didn't go where I expected but very satisfying. In particular I'm a big fan of the soundtrack showcasing contemporary Mongolian music."

Sengedorj’s The Sales Girl combines a delicate coming-of-age tale with keen social insight

"A fresh, urban Mongolia lands on Blu-ray, far from the prairies, horses, and nomadic camps spectators often expect. I was pleasantly surprised by how light-hearted, provocative, and philosophical the film is, without ever tipping into vulgarity. A top-notch release from Film Movement."
